Standard bun fight tasting at Wine-Ark...as usual our host declares everything the best it's ever been.

on entry wine was the voyager chenin...simple, inoffensive stuff

• 2010 Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc

  Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

  Colour: Bright, pale lemon green, very tiny beading
  Nose: Medium minus intensity, slight stone fruit (peach), cream, tiny alcohol heat and white pepper spice
  Mouth: Medium minus acid, fruity – especially orchard fruits; apple and pear, that tends to very slight flabbiness. Medium length, medium minus intensity, medium flavour intensity

• 2010 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis

  France, Burgundy, Chablis

  Colour: Medium minus intensity, lemon green, clear
  Nose: Medium minus intensity, youthful, green apple, lemon and mineral
  Mouth: Medium plus acid, green apple and citrus, slightly tart, medium minus body and medium length finish. Simple

• 2009 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

  Colour: Medium minus intensity, bright, lemon green
  Nose: Medium minus intensity, mineral – wet stone, orchard fruit, developing, very very slight toast and clove
  Mouth: Green apple dominates, very slight oak, balanced, low tannin, medium acid, body, alcohol, flavour intensity. Dry. Long, persistent finish but still quite subtle.

• 2008 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Valmur

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

  Colour: Medium minus intensity lemon, bright
  Nose: Light intensity, mineral but not much else going on. With vigorous agitation the nose reveals slight stone fruit, cream, slight oak and very slight honey
  Mouth: Stone fruit, slight greenness, cream and sweet spice, medium acid, medium plus body, medium alcohol that is very slightly warming. Long full finish with a wonderful rich, fleshy quality

• 2008 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

  Colour: Clear, medium intensity, lemon
  Nose: Butter, cream, clove, spice, toasty oak, ripe stone fruit over wet stone mineral and floral top notes
  Mouth: Medium minus tannin, medium acid, apple and spice – cinnamon (?) after the ripeness of the nose there is very slight greenness in the mouth. The wine has a long finish though the fruit does not carry through

• 2008 Voyager Estate Chardonnay

  Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

  Colour: Clear, medium minus intensity, lemon, some tearing
  Nose: Tropical fruit and toast over butter, cream and a tiny touch of minerality
  Mouth: Citrus into stone fruit, warming medium alcohol that carries on the long finish, slight bitterness, medium plus body; a big but not massively complex wine.

• 2009 Voyager Estate Cabernet Merlot Girt by Sea

  Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

  Colour: Medium minus intensity ruby, clear
  Nose: Jammy red fruit – touches of cranberry, slight mint, vanilla and very slight spice
  Mouth: Velvety red fruit with slight spice, medium minus acid and tannin. Not dysfunctional or badly made, but just a little simple and not to my taste

• 2009 Voyager Estate Shiraz

  Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

  Colour: Purple, medium plus intensity, medium thick legs
  Nose: Initially black peppercorns and a touch of apricot (I wonder if there is any Viognier in here?) over spice and black fruit.
  Mouth: Medium plus tannin, tight, dry, hot and spirity, little fruit and spice. Nah

• 2007 Voyager Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

  Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

  Colour: Purple, medium plus intensity, thick and plentiful legs,
  Nose: Eucalyptus over black currant, slight coffee and chocolate, biscuit and sweet spice – including clove and a touch of nutmeg
  Mouth: Ripe tending to jammy fruit, medium plus acid and medium tannin, medium plus alcohol that is a little generous on the finish but helps carry a certain herbaceous & eucalypt quality

• 2008 Kaesler Avignon

  Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

  Colour: Purple to ruby, medium intensity
  Nose: Red fruit with perfumed top notes, slight herbaceousness and slight sweet leather
  Mouth: Medium plus acid, very fruity up front – a bit of a fruit bomb in fact that, though it does diminish slightly on the warm long finish is still carried. A little simple but very pleasant none the less.

• 2008 Kaesler Mataro Alte Reben

  Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

  Colour: Purple, medium plus intensity, plenty of legs
  Nose: Leather, herbaceous over subtle red fruit vanilla and spice
  Mouth: Slightly green fruit, mouth coating, viscosity and medium minus tannin, alcoholic warmth, some menthol, cherry, medium plus acid. Quite sticky and dense medium plus body. Hmm. Kind of nice

• 2008 Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz

  Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

  Colour: Purple, deep intensity, considerable tears
  Nose: Blackberry over slight green peppercorns, biscuit and spice,
  Mouth: High acid, black fruit with slight green hints of pyrazine, chewy medium plus tannin, this fruit carries on the long and hot finish. Return in 6 years.

• 2009 Kaesler Shiraz Old Bastard

  Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

  Colour: Medium plus intensity purple
  Nose: Perfumed green and black peppercorn over black fruit, cedar, cigar box and toast
  Mouth: Peppercorns, medium plus acid, medium tannin, cream, medium minus flavour intensity, long finish, slight herbal notes, slight leather as well. Very smooth, very balanced, very nice but, alas, very expensive!

The 1er and Grand Cru Chablis were all v.nice and, in the UK, probably good value...not so much here in Ausland though...a similar challenge with the equally pleasant Kaesler Old Bastard...
