Handford's "The wines of Zind-Humbrecht 2007 -1989" with Richard Brazier, London June 3rd 2010
2007 was a good vintage for the appellation. Light yellow, pale. Classic Riesling (with the exception of the nose which lacked the petrolly element) crisp, good acidity and fruit. Rich and to some in the room almost confectionary. Tried it side by side with the 2006 and 2007 was better
Handford's "The wines of Zind-Humbrecht 2007 -1989" with Richard Brazier, London June 3rd 2010
2000 was a good vintage overall. VTs are late picked with some botrytis and hence they are dense rich wines. Deep golden colour, shows its age in a way. Dense/concentrated, rich wine with toffee on the nose. Too rich, too sweet with some crème brullee style bitterness on the finish. Too much effort results in lack of finesse and elegance. Hopefully another 5yrs will mellow it out but at the moment its a NO. Tried it side by side with its sibling from Herrenweg, and the Herrenweg wa the clear winner.

Voted 2nd favourite of the tasting. 2000 was a good vintage overall. VTs are late picked with some botrytis and hence they are dense rich wines. Deep golden colour again like the Clos Jebsel. Marmalade. Again dense, rich wine with lots of sweetness. Verges on the limit of how sweet it can go.
Handford's "The wines of Zind-Humbrecht 2007 -1989" with Richard Brazier, London June 3rd 2010
Deep golden colour like a 1980s sauternes (reminded me of the 1983 rieussec). Marmalade, nice rose on the nose as expected. Syropy, dense, too sweet. Again feels overdone on sweetness and one dimensional. Lacks complexity and finesse.
Whole group struggled to see how Mr P gave this 98.....

Like the Rangen de Thann, this was deep golden colour like a 1980s sauternes. Could not tell if this was a gewrtz or another grape. Very sweet past the limit, and just like the Rangen de Thann 2000 feels overdone on sweetness and one dimensional. Lacks complexity and finesse. Shame really.
Handford's "The wines of Zind-Humbrecht 2007 -1989" with Richard Brazier, London June 3rd 2010
Dark lemon, honey colour. Some oak. Charmless, a bit bitter and not in a good place, and to tell the truth we didn’t feel it would ever get to a good place.
Handford's "The wines of Zind-Humbrecht 2007 -1989" with Richard Brazier, London June 3rd 2010
Lemony to honey colour. Nice! Good sweetness, balanced wine with length. Rich and dense but in a nice way. Richard found it a bit one dimensional but overall we liked it.
Tasting these older Z-H wines vs good vintages (like 2000) clearly told us to stick to old. Younger wines are overdone on density and sweetness and lack complexity and finesse.

WOTN. One need to try this wine to experience the classic petrol nose of old Riesling. Elegant wine with good balance, rich with good length. You can spend a lot of time describing this wine but really the key point is its nose. We will definitely buy one or two of these to have.

Light yellow, pale. Slight petrol nose as expected, mild on the body lacked the crispness and acidity we saw in the 2007.
