Flight 1 - Welcome & a few tapas style starters (2 Notes)

The Burrata & The Fois Gras

  • 2003 Moët & Chandon Champagne Grand Vintage 88 Points

    France, Champagne

Much like its older and more royal brother the Dom, there is something off putting and weird here especially on the palate. The nose is quite inviting, floral, sweet citrus notes. On the palate there is this feeling of a sweetness that ends with a bitter difficult taste that we also encountered in Dom 2003. 88-89 from us

  • 2005 Domaine Leflaive Meursault 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Âne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Another good showing. Needs a touch of decanting and we did so for 15-20 minutes which definitely helped develop the wine vs how it tasted on open.
Good colour, darkening nicely. Lovely fatty meursault, mineral, buttery, oak and with a nice citrus edge to it. The oak is still evident but complements the style of the wine albeit we would have preferred a touch less. On the palate it is lush and round, in a good time in its life with a light sweet core and luscious fruit. A touch low on vitality but a good showing. 91-92

Flight 2 - The Main (2 Notes)

Roast Ribeye on the bone, baby roasted potatoes with pancheta

  • 1989 Château Cos d'Estournel 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Just about in neck level. Solid Cork. Decanted for 1.5 hours and definitely helped. A lot of fine sediment s be aware of disturbing it.
Colour shows its age with bricking n the rim and a brownish tint across. The nose is textbook yet again, elegant and mild with light earth, mineral and light sweet dark fruit notes. On the palate it is still firm yet the tannins are integrated with a silky edge to them. It exhibited a lot more fruit this time round vs a year or so ago when we tried it last . A solid showing. 93 drink from now but has the stuffing to go another 10yrs easily.

  • 1996 Château Léoville Barton 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Another consistent showing. To add to our previous note from 16th of Oct, the wine needs 2-3hrs plus to open up and evolve. After 1.5 hrs it still felt tight and restrained. Post the 2hr mark it evolved and opened up with a more giving nose, with herby, floral side appearing. The palate is a similar story and the tannin only loosens its grip on the wine after about 1-2 hours. A lovely wine and among the best LBs we have tried but requires patience at this stage. 92 and with a good life ahead.

Flight 3 - Cake, for Spyros Nameday! (1 Note)

  • 2007 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 94 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

Good lively, glossy dark gold/caramel in colour. Pure on the nose, citrus notes, honey, botrytis. Such a complex nose. On the palate it feels lighter than what we would expect from a 6 puttonyos, but lovely freshness, supple, dense and with nice balance. Would love to see how this ages but to be honest it was just spot on. Long life ahead of it but delicious now. 94+
