Flight 1 - Bubbly Quality / Price Comparison (2 Notes)

  • NV Henkell Trocken Dry-Sec

    Germany

    Tasted blind. Clear, very pale lemon green, almost watery. Large bubbles throughout the glass. Nose is clean, medium intensity, aromas of green apples, honeydew, white flowers. Palate is off-dry, medium- acid, medium- body, with flavours of apples, pears and melon. Mousse is course and foamy, quick to disappate. Finish is short. Quality is acceptable... generic and lacking freshness.

  • 2004 H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Tasted blind. Clear, pale lemon-gold. Fine bead, slowly rising. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, aromas of ripe apple, lemon curd, nuts, pastry, with a bready and slightly mushroomy finish. Palate is not quite dry, with medium+ acid, medium body, flavours of baked apple, lemon, toasted nuts, slight carmel. Mousse is fine and persistant, and finish is long. Very good quality Champagne.

  • 2009 Raventós i Blanc Cava Reserva Brut (L'Hereu)

    Spain, Cava

    Tasted blind. Clear, pale lemon, with somewhat course, fast bead. Nose is clean, pronouced intensity, aromas of ripe apple, lees, and a slightly funky warm rubbery note. Palate is dry, medium+ acid, medium- body, with flavours of crisp apples, citrus, hint of nuts. Mousse is fine and somewhat brief. Finish is medium to medium+. Good quality Cava.

  • NV Mionetto Prosecco di Treviso Brut

    Italy, Veneto, Prosecco di Treviso

    Tasted blind. Clear, pale lemon green to lemon, with fine, relative slow bead. Nose is clean, with pronouced aromas of pear, melon, and white flowers, no apparent autolytic aromas. Palate is off-dry, medium acid, medium- body, with flavours of pear, apple and white peach. Mousse is frothy and fine, and finish is medium. Good quality Prosecco, perhaps lacking crispness.

Flight 3 - New World Botrytis-affected Wines (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Errazuriz Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc

    Chile, Casablanca Valley

    Tasted blind. Clear, medium lemon-gold. Nose is clean, pronouced intensity, with aromas of ripe stone fruit, tinned fruit salad, tropical (guava?) fruit, slightly funky botrytis-y finish. Palate is sweet, medium- acid, full body, with flavours of syrupy tropical fruit, ripe stone fruit, light brown sugar. Finish is medium+. Good quality, but lacking sufficient acid to provide good balance.

  • 2006 Wolf Blass Sémillon Botrytis Gold Label

    Australia, New South Wales, Big Rivers, Riverina

    Tasted blind. Clear, medium+ amber. Nose is clean, pronouced intensity, with aromas of orange marmalade, honey, beeswax, caramel, and a spicy, slightly savoury finish. Palate is luscious, with high acid, full body, and flavours of marmalade, maple syrup, floral honey, caramelized nuts, and oak/spice. Texture is viscous, finish is long and lovely. Very good quality.

Flight 4 - Tokaji vs Icewine (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Tokaj Hétszőlő Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos

    Hungary, Tokaji

    Tasted blind. Clear, medium+ gold. Nose is clean, prounced intensity, aromas of tropical fruit, marmalade, golden raisin, spice, mushroom, wax... incredibly complex and constantly shifting. Palate is sweet, with high acid, medium body, flavours of orange marmalade, peel, dried apricots, honey, beeswax, oak spice. Finish is very long. Very good to outstanding quality, fascinating wine.

  • 2010 Mission Hill Vidal Icewine Reserve

    Canada, British Columbia, Okanagan Valley, Okanagan Valley VQA

    Tasted blind. Clear, deep amber, obvious viscosity. Nose is clean, pronouced intensity, with incedible purity of fruit: ripe fresh apricots, apricot jam, lemon peel, no apparent non-fruit/botrytis character. Palate is luscious, medium+ acid, medium+ body, flavours of ripe apricots, pineapple. Texture is viscous, and finish is medium+. Good to very good quality, but fruit is somewhat "one-note".
