Introduction

Got together for an Italian-themed wine dinner with new friends. Great wine and conversation!

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2007 Contadi Castaldi Franciacorta Brut Millesimato 90 Points

    Italy, Lombardia, Franciacorta DOCG

Fine mousse and nice balance. Chardonnay predominates with citrus, white fruit, and some yeasty notes. Nice.

  • 2009 Castello della Sala (Antinori) Umbria Cervaro della Sala 91 Points

    Italy, Umbria

Very nicely balanced between ripeness and minerality. Some tropical notes and a hint of oak, but some nice stoniness in the background and enough acidity to play well with food. Pleasantly surprised.

  • 2006 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Mont 89 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

A bit soft and drinking past its age - a result of the vintage I would imagine. That being said, this was still tasty. Opened up after a short while and showed some apple and hay notes. Nice finish.

  • 2010 Arianna Occhipinti Il Frappato 92 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

Love this. As a fellow taster put it, this tastes like cherry Kool-aid stored in a leather bag with some green pot in it. Couldn't have said it better myself. A wonderfully complex nose and a hint of perfumed herbals on the otherwise Gamay-like palate. A tough food pairing, but it's so interesting and fun on it's own, I didn't mind.

  • 2005 Terralsole Pasticcio 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

I was impressed at the brightness of fruit and nice acidity of this wine. Red and black berries, red plum, and a touch of earthy herbs. Drinking well with or without food.

  • 2003 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Very nice Cab Franc character with black fruit and herbal notes. Lots of oak influence in the way of coffee and chocolate - perhaps a bit much for my tastes. Lowish acidity and a very rich, intense palate. A fine wine - not my style.

  • 1998 Pietranera Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Drinking surprisingly young. Very red fruited with some earthy complexity and well-integrated oak, but little in the way of secondary flavors or aromas. Rather New-World-ish. I'd leave this for a few more years.
