Flight 1 - White (3 Notes)

Unusual and interesting set of wines. The Remelluri was profound.

  • 2009 Uvas Felices Rueda El Perro Verde

    Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda

    Deep yellow. Ripe yellow pear and a touch of citrus. Rich entry that leads into good back end acidity and soil. Big wine. Interesting and good.

  • 2011 A Coroa Godello Valdeorras Blanco

    Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras

    Full yellow. High toned, floral aromatics. Lighter weight with a nice additional layer that gives it a good feel. Melon fruit and some herbs. Bright with good minerality and acidity. This too is full of interest. I am completely unfamiliar with Galician whites.

  • 2009 La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Rioja Blanco

    Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

    Medium color. Wow, what a complex nose for a young white-lactic with a gentle whiff of oak and peach. Creamy entry feels like it comes from old vines. Bright citrus (blood orange, perhaps?), rising intensity and great acidity that reminded me of top shelf Rieslings. Spicy, long finish. This is a dynamo of a wine with so much going on aromatically and in the mouth. I kept marveling at the amazing complexity and integration of its various components. I don't think I've ever tasted a Remelluri white, but I can definitely see what all the fuss is about. I'm not one who routinely checks off the CellarTracker preference boxes, but no question about it, I definitely like this!

  • 2010 Frontón de Oro Gran Canaria Tinto

    Spain, Canary Islands, Gran Canaria

    Light ruby. Mostly licorice. Light weight, earthy black fruit with some strawberry hiding in the background. Good acidity. Some light tannin at the end but quite drinkable. Again, I have little or no experience with wines from the Canary Islands but found this quite admirable.

  • 2010 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Campo de Borja Tres Picos

    Spain, Aragón, Campo de Borja

    Now this was a different animal altogether. Thick and dark. Ripe fruit with toasty oak. Modern, woody, balsam wood base, rich, frankly sweet and syrupy. You might as well put Coke in a wine bottle-simple, tricked out, and spineless.

  • 2009 Alfredo Maestro Tejero Ribera del Duero Terrunos de Castilla Seleccion

    Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    Medium depth of color. Green herbs and some brettanomyces and wood. Medium weight, mouthcoating vanillin and not much else to it. In particular, completely devoid of fruit.

  • 2009 Eccociwine Empordà Eccomi Tinto Crianza

    Spain, Catalunya, Empordà

    Ruby. Top note of red fruit. Medium weight but appealingly textured. On the ripe side but good acidity to balance, and strong late flavor of olives. I quite enjoyed this Bordeaux blend.
