    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Tasting, brief note. Lots of very ripe black cherry and blackberry, showing in an advance and mature style. Lots of great mushroom character. Still in its peak drinking window, but I'd expect this was better a few years ago than right now.

  • 1993 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Tasting, brief note. Charming baking spice aromas with plenty of fresh red cherry. Flavors of red and black cherry, supported by firm tannins and plenty of acidity and minerality. This wine is still getting better going forward.

  • 1996 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts Flawed

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Tasting, brief note. Good, but not at the level of other bottles I tried in the past. Came across as somewhat advanced, and ever-so-slightly stewy at the end. Tonight still around a "90 point" wine, but I don't think this bottle was quite right.

  • 1998 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Tasting, brief note. Lots of red and black fruit with charming sweet baking spice aromas. Exactly the same on palate with great acidity, minerality and textures. Softer tannins. Drinking beautifully now, I would expect this right in the middle of its peak drinking window.

    Tasting, brief note. Charming red and black cherry aromas, nicely perfumed. Tough to fairly assess given I had the last pour, which gave this a slightly woodsy finish.

  • 1999 Domaine Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 91 Points

    Tasting, brief note. Alluring perfumed start with mostly red cherry, some black cherry as well. Similar on palate with good spice. An interesting contrast to its 1996 just tasted, which ws very "Gevrey," this was much more clearly producer-driven in its overall features.

  • 1996 Maison Leroy Mazis-Chambertin 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Tasting, brief note. Perfumed start, very alluring, classically Leroy. An overall exciting 1996, this has great middle weight fruit with structure that's perfectly integrated - silky tannins and lifting acidity. Great meaty spice throughout.

  • 1995 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche 93 Points

    Tasting, brief note. most spice driven aromas with some good red fruit, emerging sous bois. Palate is also very well balanced, not overly firm or harsh like less successful 1995 Grand Crus. Long and elegant.

    Tasting, brief note. Rather pale. Old Burgundy aromas show wonderful mushroom character, lots of finesse. Faintest red fruit hints on palate. Not quite as vibrant as another bottle served a few years ago at a dinner in NY. Authentic?

    Tasting, brief note. Sensational spiced and perfumed start. Incredibly ripe but with the tannic structure and acidity to retain balance and overall harmony. A very "come hither" wine.

    Tasting, brief note. Very classically Leroy as well as RSV in its perfume and spice profile, perhaps borderline extreme. Not sure how this will evolve, but I found it very easy to enjoy tonight.

    Tasting, brief note. Sensational in every way. Floral, perfumed and spice driven aromatics start with black cherry. Very similar on palate with incredibly silky tannins. Lots of power really coming through on finish.

    tasting, brief note. Lots of red fruit and very bright Vosne baking spice. Maybe it was late and I was getting "tired" but I found this less exciting than previous bottles. It seemed more firm and slightly less expressive.

    Tasting, brief note. All black fruit, still very youthful and vibrant with lots of assertive Asian spice. Similar on palate, still a bit backward and shut down. Better in a few more years or with more air before serving.

22-25 vintages of Mouton going from the 1920s to 2006. I tasted just a few, and took notes on fewer.

  • 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasting, brief note. Rounded black fruit, hints of liqueur, some cigar box and meaty spice. Long and elegant. Another wine that has consistently been inconsistent (for me), this was a very good bottle, at a very good place now. Soft, rounded and in excellent harmony. 95-96 points.

  • 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasting, brief note. Massive black fruit, great spice aromas. Still firm, dense and masculine, this would clearly have benefited from some decanter time, but continues to give clear signs of how great it will be in the future. 96-98 points.

    Tasting, brief note. In contrast to the other younger vintages, this was open, charming and ready to go. Good spice and rounded black fruit, with all structural elements in balance now. 92-93 points.

    Tasting, brief note. Cassis and dark chocolate aromas. Dense,dark fruit on palate with some dark roast coffee notes. Power and spice on finish. 93 or 94 points.

  • 2000 Château Mouton Rothschild

    Tasting, brief note. Espresso, liqueur, dense/dark fruit aromas. Same flavor profile with great structural support and density, great length. Everything still firm and slightly backward but this is developing into a great wine. 96-97 points.

  • 2000 Château Lafite Rothschild

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasting, brief note. Dark fruit, good background spice aromas. Still brooding and backward on both nose and palate, but showing so much concentration and extract from middle to finish. 96-97 points for potential.
