Introduction

Big brunello tasting from the 2007 vintage. Bit of a treat as these wines are not readily available down here.

Flight 1 - Bracket 1 - Montalcino south (4 Notes)

the first two wines really worked for me

  • 2007 Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium ruby. Sour cherry, leather, sweet tobacco, slight cedar. In the mouth it is juicy sour cherry, leather, taut medium plus tannin and touches of pepper and slight bitterness on the long finish. Very good

  • 2007 Il Palazzone Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium ruby core with garnet rim. Medium minus intensity aromas of cream, slight vanilla, some oxidised notes over subdued unripe cherry. In the mouth it has medium plus chewy but ripe tannin, that give the wine a medium plus body, and cherry, spice and slight plum and bitter chocolate on the long finish. Very good

  • 2007 Villa I Cipressi Brunello di Montalcino

    Pale ruby. medium plus intensity aromas of cherry, leather, slight chocolate, sweet spice, cream and vanilla. In the mouth the silky supply tannin is balanced with medium plus acidity but the flavours are slightly muted - some cherry fruit, cream and vanilla. I suspect French Barrique, but I'm probably wrong. the structure is balanced but the flavours are a bit of whack. Hmm

  • 2007 La Fornace Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium ruby. Aromas of leather, sour cherry, medicinal herbs and slight plum. In the mouth the wine has course and grippy tannin and the fruit (tart, sour cherry) is dominated by a slightly oxidised, bitter flavour that carries onto the medium finish. Meh.

Flight 2 - Bracket 2 - Montalcino North (4 Notes)

Again, the first two wines in the bracket were my keepers...

  • 2007 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Pale ruby. Medium plus intensity aromas of herbs - medicinal herbs - leather, sausage/bacon, and slight notes of orange and cherry. Medium plus acid and high tannin but balanced, savoury, chewy, meaty, not much fruit but a lovely wine none the less

  • 2007 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino

    medium ruby. Medium minus aromas of leather, farmyard, cherry, herbal notes and touches of cedar. In the mouth it has high tannins that are ripe and mouth puckering…the tannin dominates the cherry, clove and touches of leather and there is a slightly bitter finish on the long finish. Very good

  • 2007 Il Paradiso (Manfredi) Brunello di Montalcino

    pale ruby. Medium minus intensity, slightly oxidised, farmyard, slight brett, meaty over cherry and juniper perhaps with a touch of cedar. In the mouth the weight lacks weight but the flavours are lovely: leather, farmyard, meaty and black tea. The tannins are subdued and chalky. There is a bit of a mid scoop on the palate. Perhaps a little bit forward? Okay

  • 2007 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino

    Pale ruby. Aromas of vanilla, cream, cherry, sweet spice: cinnamon, slight leather and fruit tea. In the mouth it has medium plus acid and tannin that is silky and tongue coating. Medium plus alcohol that is warming on the medium plus finish. The wine has flavours of juicy cherry, leather, bitter chocolate and sweet spice. Clean and well made but, perhaps, a little dull

After my 05 and 06 I found this 07 a little disappointing

    Medium ruby. Aromas of slightly jammy cherry, vanilla, cream, herbal notes, slight chocolate. In the mouth it has grippy tannin that intrudes on the long finish and flavours of porty fruit, sweet spice and vanilla/chocolate. Nah

Flight 4 - Bracket 4 - Castelnuovo dell'abate (3 Notes)

This bracket of wines didn't really work for me

  • 2007 MastroJanni Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Pale ruby. Medium plus intensity aromas of farmyard, leather, meat, slight cherry, yeast extract, bacon fat and slightly oxidised notes. In the mouth the high level of tannin is slightly unripe and grippy. Sweet spice dominates the plates straining into savoury oak water and a medium length, astringent finish. Meh

  • 2007 Tenuta Fanti Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium ruby. Aromas of sweet spice and white pepper, smoked meat and sulphur, slight cheesiness and something slightly metallic. Medium plus tannin, body and alcohol that is generous but intrusive. The flavours of cherry, chocolates and cream are very muted and there is both bitterness and astringency on the long finish. Nah

  • 2007 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino

    Pale ruby. Aromas of cherry, chocolate and sweet spice over farmyard and meat. In the mouth the wine has juicy cherry flavours initially, then a slight mid-scoop before flavours of sweet spice, touches of chocolates and slight herbal notes arrive which carry on the medium plus finish. Hmm

Flight 5 - Bracket 5 - Camigliano and Tavernelle (5 Notes)

the Querce Bettina was my wine of the bracket...

  • 2007 Querce Bettina Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium ruby. Medium plus aromas intensity of yeast and beef extract, farmyards, sweet spice and cherry and plum. In the mouth the wine has flavours of juicy cherry and sweet spices as well high tannins that are ripe, chewy and embracing, adding weight to the palate. There is some warming alcohol but this is well balanced and incorporated. Very nice.

  • 2007 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino

    Pale ruby. Aromas of herbs, especially mint, leather, slight cherry and sweet spice. Touches of vanilla, chocolate and toffee. In the mouth there is an initial splash of juicy cherry fruit, then medium plus tannic grip, then sweet spice and slight intrusive alcohol warmth...the wine is initially attractive but ends up being a bit unpleasant. Meh

  • 2007 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Pale ruby. Medium minus intensity aromas of leather, meat, farmyard, slightly dusty over cherry and chocolate. high tannin that grabs at the mouth but is not astringent. The spice, meat, slight cherry and plum fruit but lives underneath the tannin which is appealing. I don't think this wine demonstrates typicity compared to the other brunello but is kind of fun.

    medium ruby. Aromas of jammy cherry fruit, slight cream and slight sweet spice. In the mouth the wine has medium plus tannin, chocolate over cherry and finishes bitter. Feels a bit worked. Meh

Flight 6 - Bracket 6 Sant'Angelo (3 Notes)

This bracket didn't work for me.

  • 2007 Campogiovanni (San Felice) Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium ruby. Aromas of farmyard, ripe cherry and red currant and herbal notes. High tannin, concentrated red cherry fruit, weighty and full in the mouth. Finishes savoury but not bitter.

    Pale ruby. Aromas of sulphur, cream, oxidised, meaty over red cherry…in the mouth the wine has red cherry, vanilla, is mouth filling and has high tannin…unfortunately the oak intrudes

  • 2007 Tenuta Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium ruby. Aromas of sulphur, oxidised, meat, farmyard and toast. Also slight volatile acidity that is giving it a lifted note. In the mouth it's cherry, sweet spice and high tannin with oak intrusion. Spice and alcohol heat on the medium plus finish

great tasting with some really great wines. Nice that the brackets were by region...
