Flight 1 - Dry White (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Reds (8 Notes)

From recent experience, I was afraid that the 2009s would be very closed, but with the exception of the Chasse Spleen, this was not the case. At very least, you could assess the other four even if they are nowhere near ready.

  • 2010 Haut de Poujeaux

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Medium ruby center. Full of olives on the nose. Light and tight with some chocolate, good acid and smooth tannins. Good straight ahead lower level Bordeaux and nice for under $20.

  • 2009 Château Reynon

France, Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers, Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux

Medium center. Dill notes. Light and slightly gritty. Redder fruit but inadequate to stand up to the structure. Balance seems off in this one.

  • 2009 Château Chasse-Spleen

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Medium color. Robust, sweaty, tannic nose. Sturdy flavors dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Dense and simple but some cocoa shows. Strong acids. Very young and hard for me to see my way through the bound up structure. Reminds me of some St. Estephe in its tough, blockish nature.

  • 2009 Réserve de la Comtesse

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Deep center with a lighter edge. Herbal aromatics. Wow, this followed Chasse Spleen and was a completely different style and feel. Softer, more elegant and far more open. I found it short in terms of both the fruit and the finish. Really not that good.

  • 2009 Château Branaire-Ducru

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Magnum, decanted a few hours in advance. Dark and deep looking. Classic Cabernet nose. Deftly done, gently oaky base. Lovely density with great texture due to round, ripe tannins. Cassis with some uplifting floral notes and excellent, refreshing acidity. Marvelously balanced with enough material to buffer the tannins. Along with the Rauzan Segla, one of the standouts amongst the 2009s poured today.

  • 2009 Château Rauzan-Ségla

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Fairly deep. Very minty nose. As opposed to the Branaire, more supple, open and not nearly as dense on the palate. Lovely spicy blackberry fruit, lively acidity. Excellent length. The menthol is reprised on the finish. Neither the wood nor the tannins are as prominent as in the previous wine. While it may not be as ageless as some 2009 Bordeaux, it is completely elegant and has the balance to age really well.

  • 2000 Château Grand Mayne

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Medium center, tawny rim. Lightly herbal and frankly, a bit stalky smelling. Surprisingly light weight and little grip for a 2000. Herbal flavors, little apparent fruit, decent length. This is completely uninteresting and underwhelming-a bad joke at the price.

  • 1998 Château Grandis

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Medium red, maturing edge. Herbaceous with some secondary perfume. Light weight, pleasant generic flavors, low acidity with some remaining dry tannins. Bleh. Not worth even the $20 tariff.

Flight 3 - Sauternes (1 Note)

  • 1989 Château Doisy-Védrines

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Golden orange. Deep, pungent botrytised nose. Honeyed palate with tropical fruits and grilled nuts. Rich but not overly syrupy. Long, lush with adequate acidity. This is quite good.
