Introduction

Several of us got together to open up some non-tuscan, piedmont, or veneto wines. All of this came from a conversation at a dinner the previous month, so I figured this could be fun and we set about putting it together.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2005 Gravner Ribolla Gialla Anfora 92 Points

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT

nose: There is a very savory quality to the pretty aromatics of roasted herbs, roses, red cherries, a touch of citrus tones and some orange peels. There is very nice depth to it and it's very aromatic.

taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and some tannins as well. Very well balanced with savory tones of roses, roasted herbs, cherries and some orange peels.

overall: It's the intrigue is what makes me love Gravner's wines. They just bring out a side of me that I enjoy drinking and I'm always left thinking about them.

  • 2009 Les Crêtes Petite Arvine Valle d'Aosta Vigne Champorette 89 Points

    Italy, Valle d'Aosta

nose: Very mineral driven nose with tones of crushed rocks, white fruits, lemon zest, pears and white fruits. There was a real nice freshness to the tones as well, though it was lacking a little depth.

taste: Lighter bodied with medium+ acidity that is nice and refreshing. There is good balance with very good tones of crushed rocks, white fruits, lemon zest and some white florals.

overall: A very nice white from Valle d'Aosta. Good and refreshing with a real attractive minerality on both the nose and palate.

  • 2010 Les Crêtes Torrette Vigne Les Toules 90 Points

    Italy, Valle d'Aosta, Torrette

nose: There is a nice floral take right away on the nose along with tones of red fruits, berries, some peppery notes, cherries and pomegranate. While there was good complexity, it was lacking a slight bit in regards to the depth on the nose.

taste: This has a very pretty medium body along with medium+ acidity. There is elegance to the tones of berries, pepper, cherries, roses and a touch of pomegranate.

overall: This was very enjoyable. It did lack a slight bit of depth on both the nose and palate, but its elegance was a nice touch.

    Italy, Sicily, Sicilia

nose: There is an upfront quality to the tones of dark red fruits, liqueur, licorice, black cherries and some blackberries as well.

taste: Medium/full bodied with lower acidity. While there is a forwardness to it, it isn't overdone with bigger tones of dark red fruits, liqueur tones, licorice, and black cherries.

  • 2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Pàtrimo Campania IGT 90 Points

    Italy, Campania, Campania IGT

nose: There is a richness to this with tones of dark red fruits, chocolate, spice tones, herbs and dark red cherries. There is good depth to it, but it is a bit foursquare.

taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. The tones of dark red cherries, spices, herbs and dark red cherries are on the bigger side, but not overdone.

overall: This seemed as good as it can get. It was a bit foursquare and chunky but the tones themselves were very good.

  • 1996 Arnaldo-Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni 94 Points

Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Sagrantino di Montefalco

nose: Rearing to go nearly right off the bat with deep and savory and haunting tones of roasted herbs, violets, incense, dark red cherries and pipe tobacco. There is a good amount of depth and layering right now as well that only comes with age.

taste: Full bodied with some chewy tannins that have some grip, but are moving more into a supporting role. There is some very nice and refreshing medium+ acidity to it as well along with savory tones of roasted herbs, violets, incense, black cherries and some tobacco with a touch of dark red fruits.

overall: This is a gorgeous Sagrantino. It has a real haunting quality to it while still having some raw power still persisting. It did get some air before hand and that certainly helped it from the get go at dinner.

  • 2006 Paolo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco Secco Pagliaro 92 Points

Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Sagrantino di Montefalco

nose: Holy cripes this is tight! Even with it being tight, there would be fleeting moments with gorgeous tones of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, strawberries, fresh picked berries and rose petals.

taste: Medium/Full bodied with huge and grippy tannins along with medium/high acidity. It's certainly young, but has beautiful tones of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, strawberries and rose petals.

overall: Tis just a baby. This did receive a lot of air, but there is only so much that can be done. This has all of the material to be a real stunner, but it will be a good amount of time before it truly shows itself.

Closing

While there ended up being two from those regions, this was a great showing of wines from around Italy. A great time at a wonderful little Italian restaurant. This is a theme that needs to be done again.
