Introduction

Sue hosts the January tasting every year and it is always a Champagne tasting. This year she chose vintage Champagnes. With the vintage wines she put out quite a spread- caviar, oysters, clams, pates, etc. For dinner, she served a perfect herb-roasted beef tenderloin, potatoes and roasted root vegetables. All wines were tasted nonblind.

  • 2001 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    From magnum. Aromas of sandalwood red currants, cherry and blackberry. Medium-bodied, with nicelyy integrated tannins and flavors of red fruit and plum; has a woody quality as well, though not in a bad way.

  • 2000 Château Pontet-Canet 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Allowed to breathe in bottle for at least a couple of hours before it was poured. Deep color. Fantastic bouquet of tobacco, leather, spice, black currants and iodine. Tannins are integrating very nicely. Red and black currants, forest floor, plum and tobacco flavors. Well-balanced across the palate and through the long finish. Fantastic stuff. 94+ pts.

  • 2006 Paloma Syrah Palomita Hamilton Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    Inky red color. Loads of dark fruit, with incense and cherry qualities. Hints of vanilla and spice on the finish.

  • 2005 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Garnet color. Bretty, in the wet hay bale way, not the funky back end of a farm animal way. Has some nice underlying red fruit and spice, but I find the wet hat qualities a bit distracting here.

  • 2009 O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder

    From magnum, decanted for two or three hours. Inky purple color with aromas of graphite, vanilla, cassis and blackberry, as well as spice (oak), blue fruit and violets. Full-bodied- did I really need to tell you this? Very firm yet fine-grained tannins with flavors of blackberry and vanilla, cassis and spice. Lengthy finish domianted by cassis and vanilla. For its size and power, there is balance here; a good amount of fruit for the tannin. Obviously, this is young and primary; hold until 2023+ in this format.

  • 2006 Two Hands Cabernet Sauvignon Charlie's Patch

    Dark color with notes of blackberry, plum and blue fruit. Medium- to full-bodied, with flavors of blackberry, cherry, vanilla, and plum.
