Flight 1 - Krug to start (1 Note)

  • 1985 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

From magnum. Balance of toasty/yeasty/brioche and fresh fruit, leaning towards toast. Good overall, but not as powerful and textured as the best bottles I've had in the past few years.

Flight 2 - Some white wine to continue (5 Notes)

  • 1997 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Forward and ripe. Easy to enjoy tonight, not the most nuanced Raveneau. Best now.

  • 1996 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Popped and poured, this was still slightly reductive. Lots of apple aromas and pears on nose and palate. Long, dense and powerful, this will be better 10 years form now than it was tonight.

  • 1995 Louis Jadot Le Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

An unusual wine tonight, this came across as disjointed and never fully emerged as balanced. Perhaps slightly past its peak, perhaps an off bottle, this was about an 87 point wine tonight.

  • 1990 Louis Jadot Le Montrachet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Rich and ripe baked apple aromas with plenty of sweet spice. Spiced and slightly candied apple and pear flavors. Great place right now, I wouldn't hold this any longer.

  • 1995 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Very lush, tropical and forward. Lots of sexy fruit, but this isn't my favorite vintage of this wine, not showing the level of balance I prefer.

Flight 3 - An old red Burgundy while we wait for food (1 Note)

Flight 4 - Trapet Chambertin (2 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine Trapet Chambertin Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    Corked.

  • 1999 Domaine Trapet Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tough to assess. Dense and backward black fruit on nose and palate. Not lots of charm yet, but this has the density and extract to evolve and improve over the coming decades.

Flight 5 - 2000 Richebourg (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Fresh and ripe red and black cherry with modest spice aromas. More explosive flavors on palate with more intense spice, precisely and unmistakably Vosne-Romanee Grand Cru. Great length and persistence. I was thrilled with this bottle vs another corked bottles from the same case opened recently.

I brought this to serve alongside the Leroy 2000 Richebourg. What a sensational pair, both showing what Richebourg is about, while also contrasting producer styles. Group was somewhat evenly split preferring Meo vs Leroy, but everybody thought both exceptional.

  • 2000 Domaine Leroy Richebourg 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Served alongside the Meo-Camuzet 2000 Richebourg. Rich, lush and perfumed start with mostly black fruit. Ripe, lush and fresh blackberry and plum flavors. Incredibly powerful and long. Classically Leroy at her best.

Flight 6 - Vogue Musigny (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Accessible, forward and friendly but much simpler than what I've experienced before with this wine. Others thought it slightly corked, I was less sure. 89 point wine for me tonight.

  • 1991 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Another of the library release magnums. Very similar to the magnum opened last year at Knightsbridge's Vogue dinner, only this time it got much less air before serving. Dark, dense and chewy, somewhat backward, showing flashes of brilliance. I've experienced this to be a highly variable wine, but all magnums have been great, but bottles that came to the US through normal distribution highly variable.

Flight 7 - Some Jadot (2 Notes)

  • 1997 Louis Jadot Echezeaux Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Off balanced, heavily reduced. A rare poor showing for a Jadot 1997. Although twice in a row for this wine.

  • 1993 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Red cherry and sauteed mushroom aromas. Similar on palate with impressive textures, energy and minerality. Very enjoyable and probably close to its peak drinking window, I just didn't quite get typical Amoureuses spice and lacy charm. Others thought I was crazy and liked it even more than I did tonight.

Flight 8 - Great Bordeaux (4 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Gruaud Larose 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Another sensational showing for this wine. Still youthful and energetic, while showing great nuanced development.

  • 1982 Château Léoville Las Cases 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

A very good bottle of this wine that has been rather inconsistent for me in the past few years. Great black fruit, great concentration. It was late, so few notes.

  • 1983 Château Palmer 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Sensational spice aromas with fresh plum and cassis, then similar on palate. Nuanced, charming and incredibly textured on palate, this was an incredibly exciting bottle of this great wine. Probably my Wine of the Night (in a night of great wines).

  • 1999 Château Lafite Rothschild 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

How often do you have a flight of 4 bottles of Bordeaux and nobody even talks about the Lafite Rothschild in the flight? Wonderful black fruit with some background cigar box, this was charming and close to entering its peak drinking window.
