Introduction

Monthly dinner again, this time our usual CNY bash at Park Palace.

  • 2008 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Once again, this was a lovely 1er Cru - very complete and absolutely delicious without quite having any Grand Cru pretensions, it started with a rather expressive and inviting for such a young wine, with gentle notes of vanilla and clotted cream, suggestions of white fruit, some lemony scents, a waft of white flowers and a little minerally undertone. Really quite pretty. As with the last bottle, I found this to be a very sleek, elegant, polished wine, with superb balance in the way of brilliantly integrated acidity to its pretty flavours of white fruited apple flesh, lemons and flowers. Well-proportion all the way from head-to-toe, this was a study in poise and focus all the way into a round, open finish, where subtle notes of spice and mineral mingled with a little creamy accent. Delicious stuff. Good now, but it should be even better in 4-5 years.

  • 2005 Viña Quebrada de Macul Cabernet Sauvignon Domus Aurea Clos Quebrada de Macul 89 Points

    From a double-magnum via a large decanter, I thought this was decently good without being great. It a typical Chilean nose with flecks of green in its nose of young tobacco leaf and sprigs of fresh herb to go alongside ripe cassis, spice and warm, earthy aromas. The palate was pleasant, with silky tannins spread under lush, sligtly sweet notes of ripe cassis, earth and warm spice, with a touch of chocolate, hints of camphor and another hit of green tobacco leaf at the finish. This had some character to it without being overtly complex. at 14.5%, there was certainly a noticeable amount of alcohol towards the back-end, but it always remained balanced enough. All in all, a decent wine at a pretty nice place at the moment, bt not one I would rush out to retaste.
