Introduction

All wines tasted blind, no theme. Just great to be with all of my friends again.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • NV Pascal Doquet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil-sur-Oger

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    A very good BdB. Rich and yeasty nose, shows some age. Earthy, mushrooms notes with yellow apple and honey. Not a lot of bubbles, again a certain richness on the palate but with enough acidity to keep it balanced. Lots of autolysis notes and similar to the nose. Nice champagne.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2008 Cappellano Dolcetto d'Alba Gabutti

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba

    Tasted Blind. Funny as originally I thought this was slightly corked and luckily it kind of blew off.
    The first words that come to mind when drinking this wine were elegant and feminine. Pure red fruit, great acidity, vibrant and full of energy with a hint of earthiness and VA (that lead me to think of Piedmont and Dolcetto) it is simply a very pretty and good wine.

  • 2005 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barbaresco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Tasted Blind. Very traditional and showed a true sense of place which helped guessing correctly the appellation. It does not have a tremendous depth or complexity but it is still a very pretty classic Barbaresco with floral and earthy tones along cherry fruit. This was drinking well and while I don't see this wine aging for another 20 years this will be a very good wine for the next few years.

  • 2005 Château Haut-Bages Libéral

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasted Blind. Minty with plenty of oak on the nose...and I went for Australia ! This is very modern and ripe and not what I expect from a Pauillac at all. Anyway, with more air, it showed a hint of cedar but at this point I don't give a crap. Sad.

  • 2009 Copain Syrah Les Voisins

    Tasted Blind. Interesting as I first went to an old world wine based on the nose and thought this was a kind of ripe St Joseph. Looking back at it, the sweetness of the wine should have taken me to a new world wine. I guess I learn something every day! A hint of violet and some ripe/sweet dark/blue fruits. I'm not crazy about the texture of the wine which is slightly creamy. Overall an ok syrah but lacking excitement and a little heavy.
