None of these were scintillating, but the distinct expression of fruit from 3 very different vintages was fascinating.

Ripe blueberry fruit on the nose. Medium weight with similar quality fruit and some spice. Very loose and open, little apparent acidity or minerality. Almost New World like in this comparison. Easy to drink but not very interesting.

2008 Domaine Joseph Roty Marsannay Ouzeloy

Lighter color. All soil on the nose. Light weight, some cranberry fruit and sour cherry, but this is dominated by acidity and earth. It is not thin but at the same time does not have the material to buffer the tartness. I wouldn't bet on this aging gracefully as the balance just doesn't seem to be there.

2005 Domaine Joseph Roty Marsannay Ouzeloy

Moderate depth of color. Black cherry and some green elements. Even over an hour, this shows some perfume. Not big but quite densely packed. A brief taste and feel of cherry liqueur, but this immediately yields to very grippy tannins and acidity that make the overall experience pretty austere. Of the 3 vintages poured, this clearly has the most to it and the greatest potential, but lord knows how long it will remain locked up behind all of this rigid structure. Tasting a wine like this leads to the depressing realization that any serious 2005 red is going to take another 10 years just to begin to come around. One also wonders whether some of them will never fully soften.
