Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2011 Pierre Gonon Chasselas

    France, Rhône, Vin de France

Slightly cloudy yellow. Fairly neutral with a hint of citrus fruit. Medium weight, low acidity, chalky finish.

  • 2010 Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

Medium yellow. Some glue. Medium but lush feel and a hint of residual sugar. Again, fairly neutral mid-palate but some definition and minerality on the finish. I preferred this to the Chasselas but did not really care for either.

  • 2011 Pierre Gonon Ardèche Les Iles Feray

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Ardèche

Purple. Beautiful, expressive violet florality on the nose. Medium weight and concentration with a sense of lightness and elegance, but it finishes in a raspy way with slightly jarring cranberry acidity. By my recollection, not as good as the one time I'd had it before, but the aromatics are nice.

  • 2011 Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

Deeply saturated color. Very perfumed and fine with purple flowers, meat and charcoal. Mouthfilling without being heavy. Wonderfully vivid black fruit, beautiful feel and length, some slightly grainy tannins to resolve. When this is tasted side by side against the Iles Feray, it becomes clear that this is twice the wine.

  • 2008 Pierre Gonon Collines Rhodaniennes Moelleux

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Collines Rhodaniennes

Apparently a one off, mostly botrytized Marsanne. Golden. Honeyed nose. Apricot fruit, moderately sweet. Short, bitter finish. Hmm, maybe there's a reason St. Joseph is not known for its dessert wines.
