Introduction

Eight of us gathered for a night of Champagne and White Burgundy along with culinary delights from Russell Klein and his team at Meritage. It just happened to be restaurant week and we did the 3 course tasting menu with a number of supplements along the way. The oysters were so good, had to do another round. As always the service at Meritage was impeccable. Our server Katie did a wonderful job taking care of us. As always, the sommelier Nico, was there to care for our wines and share in the festivities.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Pale green color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 60 minutes. The nose is pretty, loaded with mineral, citrus, lime, grapefruit. The palate is pretty wound up right now, but drinks well for its youth. Elegant on the palate with focused minerality, medium bodied with lime zest, grapefruit, tart. Medium plus finish. This should integrate well with another couple years.

  • 2008 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Pale green color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 60 minutes. Nose is very fresh, sea air, sea shells, lemon, light florals, a little oak. The palate is bold with really nice depth and creaminess. Vibrant citrus, full bodied, lime, nice acid, shells, some toasted oak, rich, long finish. I found this to be showing very well. 93+pts.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2009 Rhys Chardonnay Horseshoe Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Medium gold color. PNP, drank a small glass over 20 minutes. I didn't take a lot of detailed notes on this, but it was very nice. Oak, lime, lemon, butterscotch, full and round on the palate with a nice finish. Bordering on the edge of too much oak, but has enough other elements to manage it.

  • 2002 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 40 minutes. Incredibly fine, persistent bead with ample mousse. Very bright, citrus, stone fruit, fresh, yeast, minerals, all very focused. This dances across the palate, light, but with energy, it almost feels like its floating there. This was more open than a bottle I had recently. Showing lemon zest, apple, pear, quince, mineral. The balance was impeccable and the finish long and persistent. Very elegant. What a treat! 94+ to 95pts.

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

  • 2002 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

We opened this because we needed a red in a sea of white. Either that or we just have an insatiable apetite for wine and food. It probably was more of the latter. PNP. Drank 1 glass over 20-30 minutes. The more I drink this wine, the more I enjoy it. It is just so pleasurable. The nose is enticing and the palate is just plain elegant. I've written the details many times. This may not be powerful, but it certainly does not lack complexity. Nuance goes a long way to provide enjoyment. This will exceed your expectations. 93+pts.

Flight 8 (1 Note)

  • 2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Dark yellow color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 40 minutes. This was ridiculously good. The nose explodes from the glass offering ripe aromas of peach, apricot, orange mermalade, honey, lots of enticing botrytis, florals. The palate is dense and unctuous, full bodied with gorgeous layers of fruit: peach, pear, apricot, orange zest, and spice and honey, intense long finish. Wow, this was fantastic.
