Incredibly bright and lively colour, no browning whatsoever; lovely Firne, Würze, slightly honeyed, freshens up with air; soft, low acidity, rich and creamy but quite dry by now, slightly caramelly initially, good weight, fully mature but not tired, lovely earthiness, broad shoulders, good length.

Old gold, quite orangey; dried apricot and a hint of honey on the nose; on the palate very bright and lively, nice weight of fruit but lighter than both the Baiken and the Steinberger, very charming; good length.

Very deep colour, brown amber; roasted aromas, tofee, honey; on the palate very rich and sweet, very concentrated, excellent tension and wonderful acidity, bright red fruit flavours; excellent length, herbs. Harvested one day later than the other Eisweine and the additional cold night (with a temperature of -13C) gave tremendous extra concentration.

The merest hint of TCA on the nose; on the palate wonderfully rich, rounded and creamy, low acidity but perfectly lively, relatively light colour in this 1959 again, minerality shows on the nose, excellent length, slightly lactic.

Concentrated, powerful and precise, with high acidity balanced by excellent weight of fruit, still closed but not reductive, candied lemon, lemon zest, lovely sève, salty minerality, some residual sugar. Stylistically halfway between Breuer and Leitz, impressive.

Excellent ripe fruit, tropical hints (kumquat, mango), much more minerality than many other 2007's and does not seem to be aging prematurely, lovely balance and acidity, good length. Has developed well since I last tasted it in 2009.

Showing really well, lively, lovely freshness and minerality, has not suffered from the heat but because of the short growing season the aromatic and flavour intensity is less than in the younger vintages; the balance is good, nice fruit on the finish.

1943 Hessische Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach Rüdesheimer Eiseninger Riesling Cabinet 90 Points

The Eiseninger vineyard was incorporated into the Berg Schlossberg vineyard by the 1971 wine law and this 1943 is the only wine from the Eiseninger vineyard in the entire Schatzkammer of the Staatsweingut. Alpine herbs, eucalyptus, blonde tobacco, dried fruits, very stable; on the palate completely dry (the original 10 - 15 grams of residual sugar have long been consumed) with life-sustaining acidity and noticeable bitters, good intensity of flavours, lemon and cream; the finish is slightly short - a bit blunt if you will. A very rare treat.

From the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg, matured in new 1200 litre Stückfässer. Very vibrant, young colour; on the nose still very primary after ten years, black fruit, smoky, minerality and lovely warmth from the wood; on the palate very good intensity and energy, lovely acidity (particularly for a 2003), still a bit hard and with as yet unresolved but ripe tannins, cherry fruit flavours; excellent length. A great classic that will need a lot of time - Ralf Bengel is convinced that like the 1947 it will easily last 30 - 40 years.

Lovely, gentle, warm, mature appearance, not bricked through; wonderfully honeyed nose with vestiges of red fruit (strawberry, rosehip), after a while the characteristic note of smoky bacon appears, lovely depth, mint, very lively; on the palate incredibly vibrant and lively, with wonderful acidity, excellent balance, nice sweetness on the attack; the finish is dry, with noticeable bitters, eucalyptus and mint, very long and intense.
