Introduction

2005 France vs. USA on a budget tasted blind

Flight 1 - White - Chardonnay (2 Notes)

The Chablis was preferred by the group, but both wines were nice.

  • 2010 Domaine Pattes Loup Chablis Vent d'Ange 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis

    Excellent wine for the price. Lots of crisp acidity along with fruitiness. Refreshing and great paired with oysters on the half-shell. The last of my three bottles, although I tasted and purchased the 2011 a week ago. The 2010 is slightly better of the two.

  • 2009 Beringer Vineyards Chardonnay Private Reserve 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Full bodied Chardonnay with some butter on the nose - probably just a little more than I would like. Round mouth feel with some flavors of lemon and mild flower. Decent acidity, but I generally prefer a little more.

Flight 2 - Red - Cabernet Sauvignon blend (6 Notes)

The favorite of the group was the Mondavi Oakville, with Ch. Belfont-Belcier second.

  • 2005 Château Faizeau Sélection Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Montagne-Saint-Émilion

    Restrained wine, although balanced. Would like to see a little more fruit.

  • 2005 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    Very fruit forward nose. Smooth and easy to drink, with tannins well integrated. I wouldn't say this is a wine to age; rather, it's an easy drinker with the fruit up front while not being over the top.

  • 2005 Château Puygueraud 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Francs Côtes de Bordeaux

    Not as good as I remembered it to be. Seems restrained on the nose and in the mouth. Fairly low fruit concentration, and flavors just don't come through.

  • 2005 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    Drank blind with similarly priced 2005 Napa and Bordeaux wines. This was the group favorite and one near the top in my view as well. Well balanced, with good acidity and tannins. Starting to develop some secondary flavors.

  • 2005 Château Bellefont-Belcier 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Drank blind with similarly priced 2005 wines from Bordeaux and Napa. This was my favorite of the 6 wines. Good concentration, nice acidity and solid tannins. Has a lot more potential to age, but could be drunk now with some aeration.
