Introduction

Thanks to Mark for the invitation to this fun night of incredible pizzas and the wines of Feudi. The staff at Spacca were great and the food was truly wonderful. Best pizza I've had in, well, a long time!

Maurizio de Rosa from Feudi was there to walk us through the history of the vineyards, background on the vintages, and plenty of jokes about the French and Greeks. A very fun night!

Flight 1 - Opening Whites (2 Notes)

Served while guests arrived. Spacca prepared some cured anchovies to accompany the wines.

  • NV Feudi di San Gregorio Dubl 90 Points

    Italy, Campania, Campania IGT

    This is a collaboration between Feuid and Jacques Selosse. Intense sulphur on the nose made it seem like you were opening a Prum! The wine was a brutish sparking wine with lots of peach, mango and apple flavors. What was really interesting was the incredible dose of minerals and acidity on the mid palate and finish. The fruit was big and burly, but the acid really held it in check.

  • 2009 Feudi di San Gregorio Campanaro 91 Points

    Has a nice mix of waxy, rich fruit and a more delicate, tart underbelly. A couple of us commented that tasted in a black glass, this would have been mistaken for a Rose. The fruit profile was decidedly red...strawberries to be exact. This had nice balance at the end of the day and many people were quite fond of it.

Flight 2 - Taurasi Flight (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi Piano di Montevergine 87 Points

    Despite the poor growing conditions in Campania in 2002, this vineyard site did quite well. Lots of drainage led to a nicely balanced wine. Nose had a good deal of mocha, coffee and oak notes. Its palate had a bit of mint with some coffee and marshmellow tones. Definitely dark fruited, there was a lot of oak going on here. Probably needs some more time to soften up some of the oak influences.

  • 2004 Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi Piano di Montevergine 81 Points

    Wow was this tannic. Just a beast of a wine that will need a good deal of time to uncoil. Heavy doses of coffee, mocha, and cream on the nose point to its new French oak treatment. A bit too burly at this point to be enjoyable.

  • 2007 Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi Piano di Montevergine 78 Points

    Not as tannic as the 2004, but still displays moderate-to-heavy oak influences. Chocolate covered cherries were the dominate flavor on the palate...very rich, very young.

Flight 3 - Serpico Flight (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Irpinia Serpico 82 Points

    Showed better than the first time I tried this in October of 2011. The tannins had softened, but the fruit was still very rich with lots of distracting tannins. As expected this had a dark-fruit profile with some tobacco and spices on the finish. Seemed pretty popular at dinner, but the sappy, rich fruit didn't really connect with my tastes.

  • 2003 Feudi di San Gregorio Irpinia Serpico 89 Points

    This was probably my favorite Serpico of the night. The dark, dense fruit was there but this seemed to have a floral airiness to it that the other vintages lacked. The total package seemed to have more balance and was drinking quite nicely this evening.

  • 2005 Feudi di San Gregorio Irpinia Serpico 87 Points

    I went back for more of this than any other wine of the night. Easy drinking. Chocolate, cherries, smoke, tobacco...nothing too earth shattering there. The finish seemed to have a bite more acidity than the 2001 giving it a bit more balance.

Flight 4 - Desert (1 Note)

    A really nice way to end the evening. Vivid apricot, vanilla and pear. What struck me though was its incredible freshness. Despite having outrageously high RS levels, this tasted fresh as a daisy. Brilliant wine.
