Tasmanian Wine Tasting 2013

Introduction

A hodge podge of Tassie wines with the focus on Pinot Noir...sit down tasting. The chap next to me was from Launceston so filled me on a few details.

Flight 1 - sparkling (1 Note)

Only one of these...

Flight 2 - Various whites (5 Notes)

The Sauvignon Blanc was the pick of the bracket for me, nicely made and well worked. The rieslings were both a bit disappointing. The Pinot Gris did not work for me at all and the Chardonnay was a bit average.

  • 2012 Native Point Wines Sauvignon Blanc

    Australia, Tasmania

    Aromas of unripe passion fruit, slight grassy and green capsicum notes, touches of peach/floral notes. In the mouth there is medium plus acid and the wine is off dry with flavours of passion fruit which is riper, presumably thanks to the sugar, there are also touches of white pepper and the medium length is slightly bitter. Nice.

  • 2010 Kate Hill Riesling

    Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania

    Aromas of lemon and lime, slight dusty notes and honey. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acid, lemon and lime fruit slides into lime peel. Simple, balanced and nice.

  • 2012 Moores Hill Riesling

    Australia, Tasmania, Tamar Valley

    Aroma: Touches of diesel - a bit forward - and touches of sulphur, earthy, herbaceous and a little lime coupled with a musty note. In the mouth there is medium plus acid, tart citrus notes that are more pronounced than on the nose, medium plus length. Fruit drops off quickly. Meh.

  • 2009 Grey Sands Pinot Gris

    Australia, Tasmania, Tamar Valley

    Medium minus aromas of unripe melon, stone/mineral, slight herbs - almost thyme, creamy, yoghurty notes, slight toast (oak?). In the mouth, well for me, it's wrong. Why? There is no real fruit (a touch of unripe melon which does not carry), high alcohol levels, bitter. The texture is oily and rich. Alsace it ain't despite best efforts.

  • 2011 Stoney Rise Chardonnay

    Australia, Tasmania, Tamar Valley

    Nose: Cream, butter, vanilla, stone fruit and orange blossom.
    Mouth: Green apple, slight lemon citrus, considerable phenolic grip on the front of the palate and the tongue. Fruit carries on the medium plus length. Nice enough but doesn't really set me on fire.

Flight 3 - Northern Pinot Noir (4 Notes)

I enjoyed the Barringwood and the Home Hill (in that order). The Sinapius was okay but needed time, for me.

  • 2010 Barringwood Park Pinot Noir Mill Block

    Australia, Tasmania, Northern Tasmania

    Aromas of red cherry, toast, slight alcohol warmth, perfumed notes and a bit of biscuit. In the mouth initially cream, red cherry, touches of vanilla, slight tannic grip and a little alcoholic warmth and bitterness on the medium finish. Balanced and complimentary. Utterly inoffensive and quite nice.

  • 2010 Sinapius Pinot Noir Pipers Brook

    Australia, Tasmania, Pipers River

    Aromas of cedar, cream and vanilla over slight strawberry. In the mouth the wine has flavours of strawberry, slight bitterness and the tannic grip is intrusive. Fruit seems to drop off quite quickly and the palate is a bit tough. Needs time to meld but the fruit dropping off so quickly is a serious concern with regard to aging.

  • 2010 Meure's Wines Pinot Noir d'meure Flawed

    Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania

    Volatile acidity - wood glue, caramalised oak and tiny, tiny hints of that Pinot Noir nose...in the mouth more VA and creamy notes that resolve harsh and bitter.

  • 2008 Home Hill Pinot Noir Kelly's Reserve

    Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania

    Cheese and rubber scents that resolve with agitation to reveal a little spice and red fruit. In the mouth the wine has spice and red berry fruit that carries on the medium plus length finish. Simple but well made. Nice

Flight 4 - Southern Pinot Noir (4 Notes)

Nothing here for me - I remember the Derwent being a far more elegant wine (I had some of the 2008) so that was a bit disappointing.

  • 2010 Pooley Pinot Noir Butcher's Hill

    Australia, Tasmania, Coal River

    Red cherry and raspberry aromas with notes of toast and cedar accompanied by cream. in the mouth there is red cherry, strawberry, spice - clove, talk like tannin and it ends a little bitter and warm. A little too rich for me.

  • 2010 Holm Oak Pinot Noir The Wizard

    Australia, Tasmania, Tamar Valley

    Aromas of smoked bacon over slight red fruit compote, slight green stalk. In the mouth there is spice, smoked bacon fat, slight red cherry fruit, a kind of mid-palate scoop that comes back with a lick of cedar and then finishes quite quickly. Disjointed and short. Nah.

  • 2010 Derwent Estate Pinot Noir

    Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania

    Medium minus intensity aromas of tomato leaf, beetroot and tobacco followed by slight red fruit notes. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acid, spice, red cherry fruit and touches of strawberry with vanilla notes. A bit bitter on the back palate. There is a considerable disconnection between the nose and the mouth - which is a bit 'butch'. Nah.

  • 2010 Spring Vale Pinot Noir

    Australia, Tasmania, Freycinet Coast

    Tending to 'that' Pinot Noir aroma but in the far ripe spectrum. There is also a touch of earthiness and cedar, slight smoke tone. And in the mouth this ripeness is reinforced - cherry and almost coholate oak, spice notes, almost plum fruit in fact. Too big, inelegant, tannic grip. Not what I look for in Pinot. Will it calm down? Possibly.

Flight 5 - Random Reds (3 Notes)

And the Domaine A is wheeled out again as 'the' Cabernet Sauvignon blend of Tasmania. Which, fair dibs, it is. The Glaetzer Dixon Shiraz was interesting. Didn't like the Marion's Vineyard at all though.

  • 1995 Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon

    Australia, Tasmania, Coal River

    Aromas of brambles, leather, cedar, herbaceous notes - mint and touches of eucalyptus, slight pencil shavings. In the mouth there are flavours of leather, bramble, cedar, spice, long finish, very nice.

  • 2011 Glaetzer Dixon Family Winemakers Shiraz Mon Pere

    Australia, Tasmania, Coal River

    Black, green and white peppercorns dominate the nose which also features black cherry and sweet spice. In the mouth there is black pepper spice, slight black cherry fruit, spice, grippy, ripe tannin. Well made, young, savoury, quite Northern Rhone rather than, say, Barossa Valley. Very nice but, tonight, not for me... that's not to say I wouldn't like it tomorrow...

  • 2007 Marion's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

    Slight pencil shavings, mint and eucalyptus, sulphur and slight black currant on the muted nose. In the mouth, though, the wine has flabby, jammy, cloying fruit and chewy tannin - with notes of cream and vanilla. All out of whack. Nah.

Closing

Nothing to get really excited about for me (with the exception of the Domaine A Cab Sauv). Of the Pinot's those of the north are, for me, a little better than those of the south.
