It is quite rare to find Auxerrois in Rheinhessen - a nice surprise. Crisp, light but intense, lovely ripe yellow fruit, floral topnote, spicy minerality, hint of sweetness balances almost spritzy acidity; good length. Very good typicity, very nice wine.

1997 Maxwell Shiraz Ellen Street 97 Points

The vines are located on the second hill north of the township of MacLaren Vale. The block of old Shiraz vines runs along the north side of what used to be known as Ellen Street. Cedar, crushed black pepper, wonderful ripe crushed red and black fruit, glossy oak, perfectly fresh, hardly any tertiary development (the merest hint of undergrowth), just a hint of the barnyard and a whiff of coffee, deep, crushed rocks; on the palate a wonderfully sweet attack, a satiny texture, ripe and rounded, rich plummy fruit, a primal quality, very intense but elegant, playful even, alcohol in check (14% ABV), delicious bright acidity, amazing energy; excellent length, great aromatic persistence, hint of eucalyptus, touch of beefstock, pepper. Subtle, stylish, intense, chef d'oeuvre, a thing of beauty, an essence of Shiraz, incredibly moreish.

30YO. Amber colour; deep but fresh, Verdelho-like nose, hazelnuts, honey, almond, dried fig, heathery highland whisky; on the palate medium-sweet, gentle and soothing texture but with excellent, tangy acidity, flavours of honey, nuts, heather and figs; excellent length, very persistent.
