Visiting two wineries in the Finger Lakes region, NY

I had the chance to visit two wineries while visiting Ithaca, NY with my host. We hit two of the oldest wineries and perhaps best known.

A small tasting room, with one barrel as a table, person pouring the wines was knowledgable and friendly, tasting cost $4 + $2 for a taste of the reserve wine.

• 2011 Hermann J. Wiemer Chardonnay

  USA, New York, Finger Lakes

  Tasted at the winery. This was a clean, lemony, citrusy wine with some acidity, bordering on sweet, and easy wine.

• 2010 Hermann J. Wiemer Frost Cuvee

  USA, New York, Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake

  Tasted at the winery. Rather shy on the nose, some flowery notes, apricotty on the palate, pleasant.

• 2012 Hermann J. Wiemer Dry Riesling

  Tasted at the winery. This was rather nice, smooth apricot on the nose and palate, good acidity, I liked this and got a bottle.

• 2011 Hermann J. Wiemer Semi-Dry Riesling

  USA, New York, Finger Lakes

  Tasted at the winery. Quite subtle on the nose, off-dry peachey aromas and tastes, not much acidity to hold up the wine.

• 2012 Hermann J. Wiemer Dry Gewürztraminer

  Tasted at the winery. Another very shy nose, bit of lime, sweet feel to it, bit of minerality, not very impressed with this.

• 2011 Hermann J. Wiemer Dry Riesling Magdalena Vineyard

  Tasted at the winery. A very nice wine with lots going on, lemony, limey, minerally, hints of peach, has a long finish. Very nice and got a bottle.

Quite a large tasting room with a very nice view of the lake, very professional staff, highly enjoyable experience.

• 2011 Dr. Konstantin Frank Grüner Veltliner

  Tasted at the winery. Ooh, what a nose, quite pungent, with cat's piss and nettles. Excellent acidity here, lemony tastes, this is very good!

• 2011 Dr. Konstantin Frank Sauvignon Blanc

  USA, New York, Finger Lakes

  Tasted at the winery. Woah, if the Grüner had cat's piss, this had the reek of a male cat marking his territory! Very pungent, lots of black currant leaf, quite black currant leafy on the palate, nettles, lots going on, wild. I like this, but I can see that some might be turned off!

  Tasted at the winery. My first taste of this grape variety, very interesting and tasty. Kind of minerally and herbaceous with excellent acidity. Had to get a bottle!

  Tasted at the winery. Heps, another very nice nose, orange peel, floral, palate had good acidity, orangey, lemony, limey, very nice! Got a bottle.

  Tasted at the winery. Ahh, this is more like it, very floral on the nose, even a hint of petroleum coming through. Full-bodied, easy to drink, some sweetness to it, nice.

I enjoyed both wineries, but Frank was the better, both the tasting experience and the wines. Perhaps good that we went to Wiemer's first!
