Osso Buco Night

Introduction

I found a few lamb shanks in my freezer, so I was in the mood to make some osso buco. The theme was pretty simple as it was just: bring some wines that should go with osso buco.

  • 2005 Radikon Ribolla Gialla 91 Points

    Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT

    Nose: Aromatic and balanced nose with tones of orange peels, marmalade, pears, red apples, and a touch of sherry tones. There is nice depth with the complexity on the nose.

    Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity. Very well balanced and complex with tones of red apples, pears, marmalade, and some christmas spices on the back end.

    Overall: This is a very interesting and complex wine. It' a completely different style from the gravners I've had and shows a style of it's own.

  • 1999 M. Marengo Barolo Brunate 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Nose: Very balanced and aromatic nose with tones of dried cherries, tar, strawberries, roasted herbs, tobacco, and dark red fruits. This is showing some maturity right now with solid depth.

    Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and nice chewy tannins. The structure is certainly there, but it isn't too overpowering. There are very balanced tones of dried cherries, tar, strawberries, roasted herbs, and dark red fruits with a touch of ash on the back end.

    Overall: This is showing that it's turning into maturity. The structure shows that it has a ways to go, but this is very drinkable right now. It is lacking some depth on both the nose and palate, but it's still a really nice barolo.

  • 2001 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Brunate 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Nose: Nice and balanced nose with tones of tobacco, dark red cherries, leather, roasted herbs, tar tones, and licorice.

    Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins. The feel has nice polish to it along with tones of tobacco, dark red cherries, licorice, and roasted herbs.

    Overall: This is a well balanced barolo that feels like it's just starting to drink. The structure isn't too overpowering and the feel is rounded.

    This was tight as a drum and just didn't give up anything. Even with a lot of air, it just wouldn't budge.

  • 1995 Marcarini Barolo Brunate 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Nose: Very pretty and perfumed nose with balanced tones of dried roses, strawberries, tar tones, florals, and some roasted herbs and spices.

    Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The tannins are more refined with the structure being very well balanced along with pretty tones of dried roses, strawberries, tar, roasted herbs, and a touch of wild spices on the back end.

    Overall: This was drinking beautifully. This has a regal quality on both the nose and palate with a refined sense as well.

    Nose: There is a lusher quality to the nose with tones of red fruits, berries, red cherries, roasted herbs, roses, and spice tones. There is nice depth on the nose with an open-knit quality as well.

    Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The feel is a bit more plush with tones of red fruits, red cherries, roasted herbs, roses, and some spice tones.

    Overall: This was showing extremely well at this younger stage. It is somewhat expected given the vintage, and it was a well balanced and aromatic young barolo.

Closing

It was a fun night. We also did some blind Double IPAs with some interesting results. Even though there were just a few of us, we did some damage and had a great time along the way. This will have to be done again.
