Bobby Kacher annual visit to Chicago, again bringing some new producers as well as old favorites.

Flight 1 - Cordier with Kampachi (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - More Cordier with Lemon Risotto (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Domaine Cordier Père et Fils Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé

    Very ripe and intense aromas to start. Lots of powerful flavors with a broad array of fruit, including ripe apple ranging to more exotic and tropical. Lots of length and power, I'd give some cellar time. Slight sweetness today on finish.

  • 2011 Christophe Cordier Viré-Clessé Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Viré-Clessé

    Lemon and lime aromas to start with subtle floral hints. Lean and direc ton palate with lemon and lemon peel flavors, lots of energy at end. My favorite of the four wines from Cordier served this evening.

Flight 3 - Morot 2009 with Wild Striped Bass (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Albert Morot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Bataillère Aux Vergelesses 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

    Ripe red cherry aromas with lush character. Ripe and fat on palate, very forward and accessible. Lots of fruit-driven 2009 character to me tonight, but little nuance.

  • 2009 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    While this is also more "2009" than anything else tonight, it has much more charm and nuance than the Morot SLB tasted alongside. Black and red cherry aromas, lush and fat to start. More black fruit on palate with subtle anise and thyme in background. Give this plenty of time to soften.

Flight 4 - 2010 Morot with Duck Breast (2 Notes)

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Black and red cherry aromas with licorice, fresh herbs and earth hints. Great concentration for its level on palate, even if the fruit is slightly subdued tonight. Impressive energy and textures with a long, popping finish. At its price I expect this will be worth the wait.

  • 2010 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Teurons 91 Points

    Red and black fruit aromas with a gamy, almost Gevrey-like character. Firm, meaty and powerful, this might be a little backward but also shows good concentration on finish. Needs plenty of time.

Flight 5 - Ogier with Braised Short Rib (2 Notes)

    Dark color. Smoky red and black cherry aromas with modest spice, a great floral note and ever-so-subtle earthy elements. Concentrated black fruit flavors with great textures and nuance from middle to finish. Long, spicy finish.

  • 2007 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie 91 Points

    Very charming and classic aromatic beginning with great spice to support mid-weight fruit. Identical on palate, this is charming today, probably approaching its peak in the next few year, but good length and finesse despite just moderate concentration.

Flight 6 - Some Bonus Ogier from our Cellars (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Michel & Stéphane Ogier L'Âme Sœur Syrah de Seyssuel 92 Points

    I wasn't really familiar with this wine until just now, but wow, what a treat from the "wrong side of the tracks" from Cote-Rotie. I think Stephane said this was just planted in 2001, so very young vines. Black pepper, fat fruit aromas. Black plum and cherry flavors. Aromatically very "Cote Rotie" like, but a bit more forward and accessible on palate than most Cote Rotie at this age. Very impressive, I bought 6 bottles the next day. Good now, prob not a long-term Cote-Rotie-like (10+ year) cellar hold.

    Sensational aromatic start with lots of spice, both some sweet/baking notes ans well as savory Asian five spice. An alluring very feminine wine, very charming start-to-finish. Moderately mature black cherry, more so on palate vs. nose. Simpler overall on palate. Good density, moderate length. At its peak now. Thanks, Gary!

    Plum and blackberry aromas, slightly spicy, seemingly a litle backward. open perhaps 2 hours before serving, this would certainly have benefited from some time in decanter. Also slightly backward black fruit on palate with just subtle spice hints, but with great density and longer-term potential.

    Dinner was supposed to have the Viognier served with cheese, but the Condrieu was served instead, so lucky us. Lots of charming forward stone and tropical fruit, but at the same time better balance, less heat than often found in Viognier.

Flight 8 - After-Party (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Maison Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Not very forthcoming aromatically, but palate displays good combination of black fruit, meatiness, and reduced mushroom flavors that seem classically Gevrey. Long and elegant middle and finish.

  • 1961 Giacomo Conterno Barolo 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Pale color, shades of tea. Incredibly fragrant start with plenty of dried rose petal with lots of licorice. Earth and spice on palate with moderate intensity, lingering red fruit in background, quite charming even if not at the same level of excitement as the wine's aromas.
