Introduction

Tonight's tasting was a cellar night; an OR vs CA Pinot Noir shoot-out (drink-off?). All wines were tasted blind in 4 flights of 4 wines.

  • 2005 Sineann Pinot Noir Resonance Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    Tasted blind. Earthy and full of mushrooms on the nose. Super soft and elegant with great concentration. Finishes with length and soft, fine tannins. Drinking very well right now!

  • 2009 White Rose Estate Pinot Noir White Rose Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

    Tasted blind. Bright red fruit mixed with cinnamon candies and spice on the nose. More rich red fruit and strawberries on the body. Good weight and elegance on the body. Finishes long with fine tannins. Definitely more new world in style.

  • 1999 Medici Vineyards Pinot Noir Estate Reserve 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    Tasted blind. Very woodsy and earthy nose, no noticeable fruit left. Almost like an ashtray. Nice richness on the body and good acids, but the fruit is noticeably absent. That put it a bit out of balance for me.

  • 2004 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Ten 89 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    Tasted blind. Dark red color. Stinky, oaky nose; overpowering wood. Definitely tasted a bit older, with the fruit fading to the back behind the wood spice and tart tannins. Lengthy finish.

    Tasted blind. Bright red cherries. Elegant, luscious, and rich body--almost jammy. Showing quite well, with nice depth and weight.

  • 2008 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Red Queen Seven Springs Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    Tasted blind. Red fruit nose. Still quite young and tight, it is brooding and complex. Explosive flavor on entry, then finishes with great length and tight tannins. Good balance. Enjoyable now, but will likely get better with time.

  • 2007 Hartford / Hartford Court Pinot Noir Land's Edge Vineyards 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Tasted blind. Cherries and oak intermingle on the nose. Elegant body filled with more red cherries. Nicely balanced, though not super-high on the acid.

  • 2009 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Southing 90 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    Tasted blind. More funk and earth on the nose. Overall, I found it to be quite young and overly oaky (that's the style, I guess?). A bit of bitterness, too, alongside the tart acids.
