Introduction

Izzy is the brain child behind this rotating dinner series, and this was our first one. Thanks to Keith for hosting, arranging the flights, working with the restaurant and choosing such a fun theme. We were told to bring pinot stems, but didn't know anything else about the theme other than that.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1988 Domaine Ostertag Riesling Muenchberg 91 Points

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    Beautifully rich tropical fruits on the nose and palate. The fruit has this rustic tone to it from age with nice balance, and lingering acidity. I don't think I've drank too much older Alsatian riesling, so this was a real treat.

  • 2004 Dönnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Thought this was a bit more open than the 2007. Same great fruits, same great richness and balance...just a bit more open and accessible. Not sure it has the edge or acidity the 2007 has, but this was drinking quite well.

  • 2007 Dönnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

    Not surprisingly 2007 Donnhoff's are beautiful, but I thought this was a bit tight...or maybe the correct descriptor is "restrained". The elegant white peach, lanolin and mango were there, but the palate seemed to lack a little depth. All its flavors were gorgeous though, so I think some of the structural elements may coalesce with some time.

  • 2010 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    Pretty good stuff. Really energetic red and dark fruits - nice combo of earth and cool fruit. The palate had some nice complexity and depth.

  • 2010 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

    Somewhat dense and vinous on the nose, but it retained nice freshness and elegance on the palate. Earthy and cool, this was pretty nice but lacked a 2nd gear to me. Could morph with time...it has the right material.

  • 2010 Antica Terra Pinot Noir 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    Tasted blindly. Had a very lush, but cool fruit profile that really appealed to me. The balance of fruit, earth, florals and minerals were perfectly aligned to my palate. Great overall balance, and the group's consensus, "this most tastes like a Burgundy" wine. Brilliant stuff.
