  • 2002 Domaine Jean Féry & fils Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas

    Smelled oaky/chocolatey on the decant, but that seemed to dissipate by the time we poured it. I thought this might make up in drinkability for what it lacked in classification pedigree but in fact I think it turned out to be in a relatively in-betweensy state, the primary fruit gone but the structure still leaving a haze. The refinement of the tannin was actually pretty good for a village wine, but I never got a clear sense of what's underneath.

    First bottle corked, second in great shape with attractive aromatics right out of the gate, the typical Vosne-Romanée cinnamon spice. Nevertheless, it wasn't as forthcoming and rich as the Boudots nor as precise as the Suchots, so I probably had it down as my least favorite of the lineup, though admittedly it didn't benefit from as much air as the others since it was a last-minute replacement.

  • 2002 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots

    Hen's tooth wine, I didn't even know Grivot made a Suchots. This was nowhere near ready, but still impressive. I liked it right away for its pitch-black fruited complexion and precisely etched acidity that gave it a really fine sense of detail. It started out a little tight, but became more open-knit with air even though the aroma stayed soft and shy.

    My runaway favorite of the lineup as certainly the most rewarding to drink today, a no-doubter on the first sip as the fruit material was just richer and glossier with more breadth than the others--although, oddly enough, clearly red-complexioned compared to the blackish Vosnes; interesting to see the richer material present itself in a lighter tinge. But here there was enough primary gloss to saturate the underlying structure so the result was slick and smooth with still enough inner tension to hold it all together and hint at the spine.
