  • 2011 Marcel Deiss Alsace Blanc

    France, Alsace

    Fresh, good acidity and nice orchard fruits. Offers good value for this level. Easy to drink. Should be an excellent summer wine, but has enough heft to stand up to spicy food.

  • 2011 Marcel Deiss Riesling

    France, Alsace

    Tasted side-by-side with the '11 Alsace, I thought this was not as interesting. Enjoyed the complexity and freshness of the Alsace better. A little too much acidity here, which seemed to overshadow the Riesling character. Still, not a bad wine.

    Corked, unfortunately. You could sense the underlying character but the wet cardboard overwhelmed.

  • 2009 Marcel Deiss Engelgarten

    Piggybacking off of what someone wrote below, there is only one Deiss Engelgarten listed on his web site. All the listings on CT refer to the same wine, I believe. In any event, this is "good." In terms of the other wines we had, this one is towards the bottom of my list but that is because we tasted some really good stuff. Nice orchard fruit, acidity and minerality. Solid, but did not wow me.

  • 2006 Marcel Deiss Burlenberg

    Not my style. Good nose. Initially some funk that blew off yielding nice fruit and earthiness. However, this was too tannic on the palate and lacked fruit. Better paired with food, but still not enough character here. The Deiss whites were terrific. This, not so much.

  • 2008 Marcel Deiss Rotenberg

    Round and plush, in a way. Good acidity and minerality. Nice sweetness that is mellow and very integrated. When tasted side-by-side against the Grasberg, I initially favored this but after some time in the glass and comparison, the Grasberg exhibits a bit more character. The Gewurtz is noticeable in the Grasberg (there is none in the Rotenberg blend). A very good wine - I slotted it just below the Grasberg.

  • 2008 Marcel Deiss Grasberg

    Outstanding blend of brown sugar, baking spices, orchard fruit and acidity. To me, the Gewurtz, even in a small quantity, was a difference maker. It added some spritz on the finish and gave this nice complexity. The sweetness was completely balanced. Really delicious.

    Tasted side-by-side with the 08, I thought the 08 showed better (and wound up buying some of the 08). Both exhibited good crisp minerality and acidity with terrific orchard fruit and sweetness. This felt a bit less complex and lacked that punch on the finish. Very good.

    Felt younger and more complex tasted side-by-side with 07. Focused, with good acidity. Orchard fruits. The baking spice and brown sugar sweetness were mellow and in harmony. This definitely has great aging potential but it is hard to hold off drinking them now.

  • 2008 Marcel Deiss Altenberg de Bergheim

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    I preferred this over the Schoenenbourg by a small margin. Tropical fruit, orchard fruit, baking spices, botrytis, brown sugar. Great focus and acidity. Excellent finish. This is still really young. This is a knockout wine.

  • 2008 Marcel Deiss Schoenenbourg

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    At the end of the night, we had the age old debate regarding value. Both the Schoenenbourg and the Altenberg are excellent wines. Both exceptionally young. For my money, though the pricing of the Burg and the Grasberg made it an easy buying choice -- the wines at the tier below the Grand Vins offer amazing value. The Schoenenbourg was really good. Very young. Orchard fruit, not too sweet with great underlying stuffing and acidity.
