Introduction

Unfortunately, we only had an afternoon and evening to spend in the region, but we took full advantage of it, staying and dining at this wonderful, recently renovated property in a rather bland suburb of Reims. Despite this, the Lallement family has created a lovely oasis in a park-like setting and a sleek restaurant that provided one of the finest, most subtle meals we ate during our long week in France. The list of grower Champagnes and larger houses is not bad either, although it made us long for the bargain prices we used to see during the Gerard Boyer years at Les Crayeres. Very highly recommended in any case.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Duval-Leroy Champagne Premier Cru Fleur de Champagne Brut

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Half bottle. Light yellow. Like smelling a fresh baked croissant! Fresh, light and gingery with a whiff of caramel, herbs, and soil-filled finish. A winner.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Initial

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Disgorged October, 2012. Light color. Tight, steely and lemony right off the bat with tight bead. So dynamic though. Picked up body, texture and intriguing strawberry notes and a twist of fresh herbs. Much better with 3 hours of air. Remarkable evolution suggesting that it is simply too young! Give it time.

  • 2002 Philipponnat Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée 1522 Brut

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Slightly deeper color than the Selosse. Oppressively toasty oak at first. This relaxed to show some nice orange fruit, but it still remained intrusive and dulled an otherwise good Champagne. I couldn't warm to this, especially after the purity and dynamism of the earlier wine.
