Introduction

Enjoyed New Years Eve with Yvan and Catherine. Salmon terrine, lamb rack, cheese tray with a 7 fruit pie to finish. Awesome wines, the selection is only getting better.

  • 1988 Bollinger Champagne R.D. Extra Brut 88 Points

    France, Champagne

    I was a little underwhelmed really. Big nose, but not showing the creamy yeasty caramel notes I was looking for. Good champagne, just a bit foursquare for the big time. I know that some say you should drink the RD right after release, but I do tend to enjoy aged champagne taste. The wine had a young look about it, but was a bit acidic and disjointed, (maybe this particular bottle?) as we have enjoyed this before.

  • 1991 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune 91 Points

    France, Alsace

    Out of a 1/2 bottle. High nose of petrol and minerality, the likes I have never experienced before. Really focused and balanced flavours, minerals, tight citrus fruit and long finish. High acidity. Perfect with the smoked salmon terrine. Did I mark this hard, yes, there was something about the lightness and lack of presence (which the ZH wines tend to have) which kept me from loving this wine. But I can understand others being enthralled with the complexity.

  • 1982 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    My bottle, decanted 2 hours prior to drinking, bottle was a freakishly high neck fill. Solid, very dark core, no lightening at all. Restrained nose showing wood, underbrush and cherries. This is St. Julien, very stern and not always to my liking. Tobacco and silky smooth coffee, red fruit on the very elegant pallette. A medium weight finish, but i do not think this has come around yet, the bottle is too pristine. Enjoyed, but others may give a higher marks. Wait 5 more years.

  • 1979 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    Wow this wine is KICKING! Tobacco and black liqurice essence booms from the glass. Shows the rhone gaguire/herbs as well as road tar. On the pallette a full, high alcohol seemless sweet fruit monster with cherry cough syrup dominating. Very intense stuff. You can taste the heat of the sun. I do not think this wine is fully mature yet. A hint of caramel showing through after a while, but the wine did not degrade even after 6 hours in the glass/decanter. This bottle is pristine and has been well stored over it's life. No hurry to drink it. Glad I have more.

  • 1983 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    WoW, this is also ROCKING tonight. Great pickup this year at auction. Deep orange and gold. Very big nose of apricots, lemons and cream brule. Mature flavours of caramel, orange and cream dominate the botrytus, complex pallette. Smooth and fully mature. This is awesome.
