Dinner with Friends (Sineann Gruner, Marcarini Barolo, Myriad Cabernet)

Introduction

On Friday, my wife and I were invited to very good friends for dinner. They cooked while we brought the wine. Easy enough to do. This was a casual evening with four old friends and the wine was a great lubricant for the conversation.

  • 2012 Sineann Grüner Veltliner 91 Points

    USA, Oregon/Washington, Columbia Gorge

    A Gruner Veltliner from Washington (Columbia Gorge). They might be on to something. This was really good. Sure, its different than one from Austria, but one would expect that right? Light golden in color. The nose is pretty with slight lime notes, lemons and a lanolin note. Lacking the minerality on the nose. Slightly oily texture. Full and round with plenty of fruit on the palate: limes, slight tangerine notes and a hint of quince. This is delicious and enough acidity to work as a cocktail or with food. The group loved it.

  • 1999 Marcarini Barolo Brunate 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Decanted for about an hour. This is in a good place and while there is no hurry, I am not sure if this gets any better. Light ruby in color with the slightest amount of bricking. On the nose, it is very nice with cherries, depth, and also some roses. Perhaps some dust. Drinking it, there is a nice layered complexity. Cherries, forest floor and dried fruits. Nice balance. Nice finish. Very nice showing.

  • 2010 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 92 Points

    With the new release coming, I had never tried one. This was pop and pour. Very young and raw, but quite tasty. A nose of cassis, vanilla, and burnt wood. On the palate, lots of fruit. Very nice texture which tells me there is a goof future here. I would not recommend popping one quite yet, and I think its best days are ahead. There is enough stuffing though that I am confident it will be an outstanding wine.
