Barrel samples:
barrel 1 (French oak, 2009, 500l) Really bright vibrant nose. Dark red fruit. Good structure. Fair amount of tannin. Lovely acidity. Bright and singing. (4+)
barrel 2 (Hungarian oak, 2007, 300l) Far more mute. Drier. Lacks vibrancy. Huge contrast with previous barrel. (2-)
barrel 3 (French oak, unknown age but older than 2007 we think, 300l) Not quite as bright and vibrant s barrel 1 but not far off. A bit more mineral and a little less immediate vibrancy (4)

Bottled last month. Dark red nose. A touch of vanilla. Gently spicy. Velvety, violet and rounded attack. Fresh acidity. Silky length finishing with a very violet, floral quality. Good lift. Vibrant. **(**)

Tank sample. Halfway through fining. Similar nose. Denser fruit on the front of the mid-palate. Finer and maybe less persistent on the finish (a result of having been through fining?). (4+)

Late cool vintage but sugar and phenolic ripening came at the same time. Dense, vibrant, dark red fruited nose. Denser than the 10 garnacha on the palate (as well as colour). Good acidity and some tannins. Needs time. Just a tiny bit of alcohol on the finish. **(**)

Fined and ready for bottling. 2% Viura. Floral. Dense dark red fruit. A sense of gravitas. Very positive attack. Violet fruit. Fragrant. Rounded. Velvety fine tannins. Really long. Peacock’s tail finish. Impressive. (5)

Very dense dark red to black fruited nose. Denser, more rounded, plusher than the 05. Really quite full. Not quite my style – needs to calm down a bit. **(**)

A little less dense, more floral, fragrant cf the 07. Bright violet fruit. Floral. Structure built on acidity. Moderate length, positive finish. ***(*)

Dense ruby. Dark red to black fruit. Black olives too. Plush, silky fruit with an underlying density. A savoury edge. Fairly high acidity and a slight hint of alcohol on the finish. Lovely nose and front end, I’m less convinced by the finish. ***

Very dense, deep purple/red. Lifted nose, violets. Tannic, a sense of fruit upfront but almost no middle. Drops off very quickly. One to sniff. JM thinks it will lengthen on the finish in a year or two as it starts to open up. **1/2 at present

2011 Bodegas y Viñedos del Contino Rioja Blanco 91 Points
Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
Tighter nose. More smoky mineral than floral. Nice chalky texture on the attack and mid-palate. Tighter. Positive and quite long on the finish. Not as good a vintage, but side-by-side I prefer this to the 2010. ****

Tank sample. Somewhere between 10 and 11 on the nose. More pear and white fruit with a spice. A touch tropical but the citrus and pear comes through on the finish. (4)
