    Golden raisins, apple cider, and sherry-like aromas. The palate is dominated by apple cider and some flavours of shiitake mushrooms. This has very good length and mouthwatering Krug-like acidity.

    Very pale in colour. Very typical sauvignon blanc nose: gooseberries and kiwifruit with a bit of Meursault richness thrown in for good measure. The palate is also very reminiscent of a Meursault in texture; sweet, rich and buttery, but somehow held in check by the green acidity of sauvignon blanc. Awesome stuff.

    Bright purple. Very powerful aromas, with some cabernet franc notes showing through. Otherwise, you get whiffs of blackberries, vanilla, and dust. This is pretty bizarre on the palate. Thin texture. Seems ripe but green at the same time; not really sure what's going on here...

    A ripe cherry and strawberry nose with none of those green meanies that everyone talks about. Hints of Christmas spice. The palate doesn't have great length or depth; on the other hand, there's no denying the sheer girl-next-door-style prettiness of this wine. The palate is fresh with some flavours of overripe berries. The lesson to be learned here is not to discriminate against certain vintages. The best producers will still do well.

    Golden. No signs of oxidation. Notes of apple on the nose, with light oak use. Perhaps there is even a hint of tart cherry -- I think blind, I'd have trouble distinguishing this from a lighter red. Juicy acidity on the palate, with predominant apple flavours again. Very light touch of oak here. Delicious.

    Not a great showing. Muted nose with notes of green apple and brioche -- textbook. Intense green-apple acidity on the palate, but the oak is coming off a little strong to me. This has the familiar painful intensity of Krug.

  • 2004 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre 90 Points

    Quite young. Pale yellow with a tinge of green. Some sulphur on the nose still. Aromas of tart white peaches, tangerines, and a little bit of vanilla. The palate is very delicate, without any buttery texture. Lovely green acidity, this is a very pretty Meursault.

  • 2010 Château Léoville Las Cases 90 Points

    It looks like a purple ink beast -- stains the sides of the glass in which it was served. Very powerful aromas of ripe dark fruit and vanilla cream. The palate is an absolute monster as well: massive tannins, fruit, concentration, the whole deal. Awesome right now if you want a Fight Club like experience. Otherwise, this has to sit for a very, very long time... I've no doubt this will improve over time, but drinking this now is very much less than pleasurable.

  • 2007 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 93 Points

    From magnum. Dark inky purple. A veritable fruit salad on the nose, with aromas of raspberry and blackberry candy; perhaps Swedish Fish? The palate is surprisingly fresh and not jammed with fruit, though that is clearly the dominant tone. Excellent balance in preventing the whole wine from becoming ungainly, though for my taste, I prefer a little bit more acidity.

    Pale, with a tinge of green. Nose of freshly mowed grass. Crisp and refreshing. Mouth-puckering unripe kiwi notes, but served cold enough, this is just delightful.

    Smells like old Burgundy. Lovely earth and mulch tones with some fruit still shyly showing through. Delicious vein of acidity, with some olive (?) notes. Very savory and umami as well. Rich, but the acidity is there to cut through everything. The tannins are smooth and resolved; incredible bottle. Many thanks to a generous neighbour.

  • 1989 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 93 Points

    Lovely aromatics. Slightly earthy, green peppery, and underneath it all, a thin layer of ripe currants (think Ribena). The palate has that same earthy note. Perhaps on the austere side with a little bit of barnyard funk, this nonetheless has a bit of sweet currant on the palate. Great semi-resolved tannins, this will benefit from another decade.
