Introduction

Slugfest again at poker with Chris in Sunnyside and me deciding to chop first place so we could get back to tasting. Really strong showing in both poker and the wines. Not a clunker in the bunch, really.

  • 2009 Pyramid Valley Chardonnay Field of Fire

    Pretty dark gold color. Nose is dominated by a sulphur blast and flint. A little off putting as its quite present. Palate is sweet ripe tree fruit. I know this is well liked but didn't float my boat unfortunately.

    Totally caught off guard by this wine. It was lurking in the ice bucket waiting for the cigar smokers to get started so I sneaked a sip. This would hang with the top Sauternes. Beautiful nose of apricot and dried fruit. Palate is sweet fruit with enough acid to cut through the noise. Super wine.

  • 2010 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé

    Light pink color. Nose of strawberry and minerals. Palate is perfectly balance with strawberry, peach, minerals, and dusty note. This is not overtly sweet which I appreciate. What's not to like.

    Decent rose for 13 bucks. A bit sweet on the attack which is pear, peach, and strawberry. I always enjoy a good chill on these.

    Strong showing for the money. Dark plum color. Nose and palate aligned with dark plum, dust, black cherry, and forest floor. Solid wine.

  • 1996 Waninga Shiraz Premium Reserve Skilly Hills

    Heads did spin as I tasted this blind and guess aged Shiraz but only because a few months earlier Tim showed me what good aged Aussie Shiraz can do. This was probable wine of the night for me, I went back three times for a taster. Thanks my friend.

  • 2010 Mollydooker Enchanted Path

    Blind. Guess some kind of blend but wasn't sure so I called a new world bdx blend. This was neck and neck for WOTN for me with the aged Shiraz. Great to contrast the two wines since this was more fruit forward at this stage as you'd expect. Let this add 10 years and it'd probably improve and it's terrific right now so don't feel bad about popping the cork now if you really feel the need.

  • 2008 Turkey Flat Mourvèdre

    Blind. Took three guesses at this before I gave up and begged to be put out of my misery. I never tasted pure Mourvèdre from Oz so I was really fishing around because it was more fruit forward yet had the softness of a Mourvèdre. Light mid palate and medium / short finish.
