STG Does 90 and Older CdP

Introduction

I just adore aged CdP. My STG mates were amazingly generous and put together this amazing line-up of wines. The Bonneau and 89 Beau ended up being two of my top wines of the year. Thanks to each of you for your generosity.

Flight 1 - Opening Round of Rose (2 Notes)

Frankly, neither of these Rose were that interesting.

Flight 2 - Starter CdP (1 Note)

This wine will be even better in a few more years.

  • 1994 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 93 Points

    I recently bought 4 of these from Winebid. I intended to open my first one for this tasting, but when I removed the capsule I found leakage. A second bottle showed the same signs. Winebid agreed to take all 4 back. The 94 is closed but it still offers leather and caramel. With time it showed signs of opening. I should have decanted this for a few hours. The palate is lush and concentrated with tastes of dried herbs and charcoal. This is such a baby.

Flight 3 - 1990 CdP (3 Notes)

  • 1990 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 97 Points

    My goodness. What a wine. Only the tremendous 89 Beau kept it from WOTN. The nose is gorgeous with tastes of vanilla and ripe cherries. The palate is huge, lush and balanced with tastes of char, sweet fruit, and great minerality. This wine is so big and so balanced. Nearly perfect.

  • 1990 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 91 Points

    The nose is fairly closed, but it does show some dark and brooding elements. The palate is even more closed. There is plenty there, but it is hiding. Even so, I find plenty of sweet, sweet fruit, great length, and a powerful structure.

  • 1990 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 95 Points

    This was Roy's bottle, and I am glad that I have one resting in my cellar. The nose shows horse, leather, dried herbs, and tar. That palate is chalky with a slight ashtray element. I also find burnt caramel, minerals, and smoky bacon. This was the most mineral of the wines at the tasting.

Flight 4 - 3 great vintage from Beaucastel (3 Notes)

  • 1983 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 90 Points

    This is a good resolved CdP. The nose shows cherry, smoke, and cedar. The palate is balanced with smoke, vanilla, and pine. Overall it is shorter than the other Beaus.

  • 1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 98 Points

    I continue to love this wine. The nost is brooding and still very tight. I find notes of dried herbs, dark fruit, and a touch of heat. The palate is very thick (thickest of the night), wonderfully sweet, and perfectly balanced. This needs 15 more years.

  • 1990 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    While I love this wine, when it is tasted next to the 89 it does suffer a bit. It still, however, is a terrific wine. I hope to enjoy many bottles of this as I wait for my 89s to mature. The nose shows horse, dried herbs, and minerality that is reminiscent of an ocean breeze. The palate is open, sweet, and lush. In addition to sweet fruit, there is a good dose of minerals.
