Introduction
Syrah is the favorite grape of Apostolos Mountrichas, owner and wine-maker at the Avantis Estate winery, on the island of Evia. This tasting took place at the winery, were all 3 of the winery's syrah offerings were tasted alongside 2 wines from the Northern Rhone and 1 from Australia (not reviewed here)
2009 Avantis Estate Syrah Collection 90 Points

This is the estate's flagship wine and one of Greece's icon wines, produced at only 1000 bottles a year and retailing at 45 to 50 Euros a bottle at the local market. Very dark purple. Somewhat restrained nose with focused aromas of dark chocolate, blackberry and bluberry jam, sweet spices, fruit cake and some meaty scents. Medium to full-bodied with firm tannins, dense fruit, balancing acidity and a very long aftertaste. This is still a baby, in need of at least 3 to 5 years to express itself and even more to reach its peak. Great potential here.

2007 Avantis Estate Syrah Collection 91 Points

This is the estate's flagship wine and one of Greece's icon wines, produced at only 1000 bottles a year and retailing at 45 to 50 Euros a bottle at the local market. Tasted from magnum at the estate alongside other wines from the syrah grape. Much more expressive than the 2009 but still far from its prime, with dark berries, blackberry jam, fruit cake, dark chocolate and spicy scents. Medium to full bodied with high fruit concentration without being heavy or cloying. Firm but juicy tannins, balancing acidity and a very long aftertaste. In need of further cellaring.

2008 Delas Frères Crozes-Hermitage Domaine des Grands Chemins 91 Points

Medium garnet with ruby hues. Expressive nose with loads of black pepper alongside red cherry and berry fruit and herbal nuances with leathery notes. Medium-bodied, soft and balanced with a long spicy aftertaste. A typical Northern Rhone syrah to drink now or over the next 5 years.

2004 M. Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Deschants 89 Points

From magnum. Medium garnet fading to brick, indicating maturity. Expressive and evolved nose with ripe red berry fruit like strawberry, meat, spices and earthy scents. Medium-bodied , soft and balanced with ripe to overripe fruit and a medium to long aftertaste. Fully mature at this stage.

2009 Avantis Estate Syrah 89 Points

Dark ruby-purple. Sweet nose with vanilla, dark chocolate, blackberry jam and sweet spice. Medium-bodied with rich fruit and firm tannins. Medium acidity and satisfying aftertaste. Might improve with another 2 years of cellaring to integrate the oak.

2009 Avantis Estate Agios Chronos 89 Points

Dark ruby-purple. Initially some raisiny notes that faded after some swirling in the glass. Then, herbal and fruity aromas took hold, with intense sweet spices. Long aftertaste. Still quite primary, needs 2 to 5 years of additional bottle aging and then it might merrit a 90+ score.
