Introduction

Second night, second dinner. I didn't take notes on wines after dinner as we chatted and walked around.

Flight 1 - Mostly Champagne to Start (4 Notes)

  • 1996 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 95 Points

    France, Champagne

    Lots of fresh apple and pear, great lift and energy from start-to-finish. Long, precise and incredibly elegant. Faint hints of toasty character in background.

  • 1990 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 94 Points

    France, Champagne

    Rich and ripe start with lots of apple and pear, some nut hints as well. Lots of ripe fruit also on palate, more toast hints than I recall from last time but still a very fresh, very powerful 1990.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Initial 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Very forward, concentrated and lush. Lots of fat fruit along with lots of toasty, yeasty character. Excellent in its style, just not my preferred style of Champagne.

  • 1992 Domaine Leroy Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Lots of apple to start with modest spice aromas. Apple on palate, some lemon to finish. All well textured with good acidity providing support through moderate finish with average length and intensity.

  • 1999 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    Quick taste. Dark, meaty and somewhat brooding, this was very similar to a recent magnum of the same wine. Lots of fruit and background spice, lots of structure, this will be much better a decade from now.

  • 2000 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    Quick tasting. Much like I remember another bottle from late last year, this is forward, charming and very accessible today. Rounded black fruit, great spice, everything in wonderful balance. Moderate intensity. Great contrast with the 1999 just tasted, which is more powerful and concentrated but less accessible today.

Flight 3 - Leroy and Meo-Camuzet 1999 NSG Boudots (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Leroy Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Lots of spice with moderately mature black fruit aromas in a very Leroy, very Vosne style. Mostly black cherry flavors with some red cherry hints, also well spiced and well structured with lots of energy. A fascinating contrast to the more lush Meo 1999 Boudots served alongside. I slightly preferred the Meo organoleptically today but think the Leroy will continue to evolve more from here.

  • 1999 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Lots of ripe black fruit aromas with alluring baking spice support. Lush and forward black cherry and boysenberry flavors, also great spice. Incredibly pleasurable, moderate length and nuance. Great contrast to the Leroy 1999 Boudots in the next glass, which I found a little less fun but perhaps more nuanced.

Flight 4 - More Leroy and Meo Boudots (4 Notes)

  • 1990 Domaine Leroy Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Very large scaled black fruit aromas with robust spice. Mostly sweet black cherry, some red cherry hints, still vibrant and fresh on palate. A little monolithic today, but i expect more charm to emerge with more time in the cellar, given lots of supporting structure throughout.

  • 2002 Domaine Leroy Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 93 Points

    Just a baby, but I thought it would be fun to open in the context of other bottles of Meo and Leroy Boudots. Large black and red cherry aromas and flavors, somewhat backward for right now. Lots and lots of spice throughout in a meatier style than most of the Boudots today, showing as much "NSG" as "Vosne" character. Needs lots more time in cellar.

  • 2000 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Mature red fruit with modest spice on both nose and palate. Showing lots of 2000 character with plenty of charm to start, moderate density or intensity. At its peak now. Interesting contrast with the more nuanced Meo 1998 Boudots in the next glass, as well as the several vintages of Leroy Boudots approximately in the same flight.

  • 1998 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Slightly restrained red and black fruit aromas with moderate spice. Everything in harmony of the palate, well textured and balanced with lots of subtle charm. More complete for me than its 2000 counterpart in the next glass, also with more upside from here.

Flight 5 - Odds and Ends (3 Notes)

  • 1996 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs

    France, Champagne

    Lots of fresh fruit aromas and flavors with very good texture. Still not showing quite the level of power and concentration I would expect. Give more time vs most 1996 which are ready or aging quickly.

  • 1961 Berry Bros. & Rudd Musigny 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    Several of us saw this bottle at the Flickinger old wine tasting/ sale earlier in the day and thought it would be a fun addition to dinner tonight. Popped and poured. Started with earthy, restrained aromas, slightly musty, then evolved and opened to charming mushroom character with whiffs of black fruit. Powerful and well textured palate, this kept improving in glass over the 30 minutes open.

  • 1992 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 93 Points

    Decided to bring this magnum because so many other people were bringing Prum GK Auslese that was just way too young (2005 etc). This was glorious, lots of intense, ripe apple pie aromas with a hint of fig. Same of palate. Long and persistent.
