Introduction

Our friends from Knightsbridge hosted a dinner with Maison Champy's great winemaker, Dimitri Bazas. A few bonus wines made their way to dinner as well. Kudos to Knightsbridge, Champy and Dimitri for a fun and educational evening.

Flight 1 - Whites to start (4 Notes)

Flight 2 - Champy Volnay Taillepieds (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Maison Champy Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Bright and elegant start with mostly red fruit, modest spice, some floral touch as well. Slightly more spice on palate, again showing red cherry and strawberry flavors.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Black and red fruit aromas and flavors, quite ripe, particularly vs its 2008 and 2010 counterparts in this flight. Less floral, modestly spiced. Forward and lush, this is very easy to enjoy.

  • 2010 Maison Champy Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Dark berry aromas with great spice and a hint of new oak. Nice floral elements throughout. Great density of palate, showing both black and red cherry and berry, with nice mineral touches. Long and energetic, this is a superb value wine.

    Strawberry and some earthy aromas. Elegant and well balanced. Lighter styled Grand Cru, showcasing the vintage well. Moderate length.

  • 2008 Maison Champy Charmes-Chambertin 86 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Black fruit aromas with assertive new oak still pronounced today. Firm on palate, good concentration. I didn't really enjoy this wine a lot tonight vs other Champy 2008s but see better potential as everything integrates better.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Charmes-Chambertin 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Lots of ripe fruit predominant on nose with subtle spice. Same ripe black fruit flavors, more obvious spice support. Everything in balance nicely now, this is very charming today with upside potential as it picks up more nuance.

Flight 5 - Champy Echezeaux (3 Notes)

    Ripe and forward black fruit aromas and flavors with very charming Vosne-like spice. Very easy to enjoy tonight with every element in harmony. Perhaps not incredibly complex or long-term cellar worthy, but this is very charming and classic for near-term enjoyment. Interesting, somewhat counterintuitive 07/08/09 flight.

  • 2008 Maison Champy Echezeaux 90 Points

    Very impressive fruit and spice on nose and palate, lots of good fruit and spice. I found the new oak still a bit assertive, which threw off the balance slightly. Give this some good cellar time to integrate better. A fascinating 07/08/09 flight.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Echezeaux 89 Points

    I haven't tried this wine since just after release. Much like a few years back, showing very ripe fruit, bordering on too ripe, but unquestionably enticing . This time I found it slightly less balanced and exciting, with more emphasis on the ripe fruit vs spice, energy or nuance.

  • 2003 Maison Champy Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Slightly ripe aromatic start, all black fruit. Moderately advanced for a 2003, but it is ten years now. Good power and balance overall.

  • 2005 Maison Champy Mazis-Chambertin 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Popped and poured. The rare 2005 Grand Cru that is open and forthcoming today, this was large scaled and dense but also showing forward fruit and great spice, all in a meaty package. Thanks, Rocky!

  • 2002 Maison Champy Mazis-Chambertin 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Very charming mature black fruit aromas, lots of earthy elements on both nose and palate. Very good and pleasurable, just a bit more advanced than I would expect.

  • 2000 Nicolas Potel Charmes-Chambertin 86 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Earthy with some interesting soy notes. Same on nose and palate. Less fruit than I would expect, a bit more brett, and not exactly pristine. If tasted blind, I'd have certainly thought older than 2000. Drink up. Got a little better with more air, with some of the brett character dissipating.

    Very alluring aromatic start with lots of red fruit, floral notes and lots of baking spice. Identical flavors on palate, lots of red cherry and raspberry, with great spice, great mineral elements and impressive energy. At its peak now. Thanks, Winefool!

  • 1989 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    Very ripe red and black fruit aromas, less evolved than I would expect from a 1989. Similar on palate, with a slightly restrained overall character, with less earthy elements throughout. If served blind, I would have thought this younger, but still from an aggressively ripe vintage, perhaps 1997. Thanks, Ken, for sharing.
