Worldwide Chards plus Rieslings

Six of us gathered at ECC. This event was themed around whites form all over the world. We ended up with a mix of chards from all over and a handful of Germans.

• 2002 Delamotte Champagne Blanc de Blancs Millésimé 92 Points

  France, Champagne

  Pale gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 30 minutes. Very nice nose with a burst of minerals, fresh air, green tree fruit. The palate is quite nice, pear and green apple, light body, verve, great acid and minerality, very little yeast, very clean and refreshing. 92+pts.

• 2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros 94 Points

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

  Pale gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. Oh my, this is intense, the nose has this wind driven sea air quality that just grabs you, pure lemon, lemon zest, with white flowers, and a hint of beeswax, dry earth. The palate is also a wow, lemon, lemon chiffon, great acid and energy, stony minerals, just a hint of candied orange peel. The finish is penetrating and 90 seconds plus long. This is one fine wine. My #1 of the Chard group. 94+pts.

• 2009 Peay Vineyards Chardonnay Hirsch Vineyard 93 Points

  USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

  Light gold color. Drank 2 glass over 90 minutes. This brings citrus, lemon, honeysuckle, spice, though I have a sense this is holding back more. The palate is round and full bodied, moderate oak, slightly buttery/creamy, lemon, very flavorful, toast, nuts. The finished seems a bit clipped right now. This was quite classy and should improve with some time. 93(+)pts.

• 2009 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 94 Points

  Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

  Pale gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. Wow, big nose here as usual, tropical fruits, citrus, melon, ripe, floral. The palate has grapefruit, tropical, citrus, full body, bold, moderate oak, nice minerals, a touch of butterscotch. Long finish. This has it all: balance, elegance, and and depth. 94+(+) to 95pts. This is so good already, very young and will improve further.

• 2008 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

  Germany, Nahe

  Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 60 minutes. This was disappointing given the previous bottle's showing. This was way sweet, and for me, very cloying. Nice on the nose, very ripe, pineapple, peach, light petrol on the nose and palate, grapefruit, lychee and minerals. Seemed to lack the acid tonight to balance that sweetness. It did improve as it got warmer. This needs a couple years.

• 2005 Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese 92 Points

  Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  light gold color. From 375ml, Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nose shows orange rind, tangerine, petrol, peach, white blossums. The palate is full bodied, creamy and lush with petrol, peach, apple, apricot, spice, and a touch of mint. Medium plus finish. 92+ to 93pts.

• 2007 Weingut Keller Monsheimer Silberberg Rieslaner Beerenauslese 94 Points

  Germany, Rheinhessen

  Medium gold color. From 375ml, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Intense nose tangerine, apricot, florals, citrus, lighter spices, and minerals. The palate has great depth and concentration, orange, tangerine, apricot, minerals, mild spice, long finish. Well balanced. 93+ to 94pts.

All in all, a pretty darn good tasting.
