"Tonight, we'll continue our Chateauneuf du Pape tasting series with a look at the 2006 vintage. This vintage in Chateauneuf was sandwiched between two very big, ripe vintages, both of which captured most of the press attention and leaving this vintage in relative anonymity. However, in this relatively cool year for the appellation, many domaines produced outstanding wines, in many cases somewhat more forward than either 2005 or 2007. In these cooler vintages, more of the terroir complexity of the region comes out, and these wines are full of garrigue, woodsy notes, lavender, minerals and spice.

Tonight we'll try six top examples from the vintage, headed by the Vieux Telegraphe, Saint Cosme, and Marcoux. To round out the tasting, we'll have one ringer each from Spain, California and Australia, including the powerful Alto Moncayo, made from old vine Grenache in Campo de Borja northeast of Rioja and near the Pyrenees foothills, by Chris Ringland, and Australian who has made several 100 point wines under the Three Rivers label. From California, we'll have the Pax Cuvee Moriah, which was winemaker Pax Mahle's second last vintage of this wine. "
