Introduction

Laurent and his wife were very nice and hospitable. This is a small country farmhouse operation with lovely wines. Whole clusters are used and it really comes across in the wines, giving great aromatic lift. We started with a white and a rose that were typical of the region and didn't really grab my attention but his reds are lovely.

  • 2011 Domaine Charvin Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange 'à côté' 90 Points

    I've tasted this three times in the last week and every time it has been very enjoyable. Such an unusual blend. Laurent at the Domaine explained that this is 50% Grenache and 50% Merlot gorwn in a vineyard that is outside the bounds of but also directly adjacent to CdP and CdR. It really sticks well with the house style with a nose of stems, incense, liquorice, dark berries, light roast coffee, olives, and a touch of kirsh liquor. 13.5% alcohol listed on the bottle keeps this refreshing and light. Only thing that detracts on the palate is a liquorice/medicinal note and a bit of a short finish, but this is immensely enjoyable due to house style.

  • 2011 Domaine Charvin Côtes du Rhône (Le Poutet) 90 Points

    Tasted at the Domaine and again a few days later. Very nice, I just love Charvin's house style, stemmy, incense, spices. Red fruited. This is young and primary however and for my palate will be be drinking better in a few years. The exuberant red liquorice fruit needs a bit of time to calm down.

  • 2011 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    We were disappointed that when we arrived at Charvin they had no CdP in bottle to taste or buy. Laurent is a very nice guy and got the ladder out, climbed to the top of his tank and sampled us his 2011 CdP. Too early for me to score accurately, but man this was beautiful, probably 92-94. Keeps with the house style but with a greater concentration of fruit. This will need some time to settle down. Nice touches of coffee, spices, liquorice, and plums. Lingering finish. Lovely!
