The Wines of Heritiers du Comte Lafon and Daniel Barraud

This was a survey of Macon, Pouilly-Fuisse, etc. The appellations South of Beaune. We started with the Lafon wines. Solid all around, but in my opinion the Barrauds offered much more.

• 2011 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine

  France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine

  Darker yellow color. Solid core of green apple and mineral. Acidity well balanced.

• 2011 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette

  France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Chardonnay

  This exhibited same reticence that I noted in tasting note from 2 months ago. This will probably require a year or two to develop. Lacked the same juiciness of the Milly Lamartine. The underlying fruit was subtle. Acidity dominated too much.

• 2011 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine Clos du Four

  This really punches you in the face on the nose and palate. The acidity bursts out of the game. I found the fruit to be a bit tart. Green apple, mineral and toast. This paired better with food.

• 2011 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré-Clessé

  Mouthwatering and juicy. The acidity here is more refined and the fruit is there. A bit on subtle, shy side ride now. Everything is well balanced, and the finish is nice.

  Fresh, good acidity and robust orchard fruits make this a very solid QPR. Easy crowd pleaser. Nothing is out of whack. Terrific value at this price point.

• 2011 Daniel & Julien Barraud Saint-Véran Arpège

  A lit more subtle and refined than the Macon-Fuisse. Nice acidity. The fruits are a bit shy, and this could probably stand to sit in the cellar for a year or two.

  Good concentration. Definitely a step up in quality. Nice stony minerality blended well with orchard fruit, green apple and a hint of wood.

  This could probably stand to age for a year or two. Good acidity, with solid minerality and fruits but it seemed a bit less forward than the Alliance.

  My WOTN. Terrific balance, tension and acidity. The concentration is there. This is juicy, with stony minerals, green apple, a touch of wood leading to a very nice finish.

• 2011 Daniel & Julien Barraud Pouilly-Fuissé En Buland Vieilles Vignes

  A close second on this night. Good concentration. The minerals and fruit are well balanced. The finish is terrific. Had just a little less of the stuffing than the Les Crays, but it was very close.
