Introduction

A tasting of mostly Sangiovese based wine. Learing a bit about aromas with the excellent Nez du Vin kits and experiencing different terroir, winemaking techniques and vintages.

  • 2011 Santa Cristina (Antinori) Toscana IGT 86 Points

    Initially some barnyard that was really off-putting. This blew of in half an hour, while some hints of vegetale aromas remained.
    The wine was better on the second day (sorry for the visitors on the tasting event!)

    Deep ruby/red color. Aromas of forrest fruit, dried herbs and some vetale hints. Medium bodied on the palate with smooth tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is medium-long.

    This wine might benefit from decanting. Overall I am a bit surprised by the unnaproachable-ness of this wine, I did not expect this for such a mass market wine. The price of EUR 7,99 at AH is OK.

  • 2009 Sesta di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino 89 Points

    Maturing nicely. The leather notes have become more distinct and the fruit is generally more dark. Still fresh and smooth.

  • 2010 Conti Costanti Rosso di Montalcino 89 Points

    Medium ruby/red color. Bright aromas of cherry and fresh berries and hints of leather. Full bodied and fresh on the palate with smooth, dusty tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long and fresh.
    Still not at its peak, but drinking nicely. More mature than the '10 Sesta di Sopra Rosso we tasted alongside.

  • 2001 Pian Delle Vigne (Antinori) Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

    Again slow-oxed for about 6 hours.
    Another great bottle and much in line with the previous two.

    Ruby color with some light hints of amber at the rim. Expressive aromas of ripe dark fruit, some cherry, smoke and dried flowers. Full bodied with a silky mouthfeel smooth tannins, a great fruit and acidity balance with some of that sweetness of fruit that characterises a classic Brunello. The finish is long and remains fresh throughout.

    Perhaps maturing a bit earlier than some other '01 Brunelli, drink now - 2016.
