Introduction

This comparative tasting was the first ever to be conducted in Singapore. Organised by The Wine Review in collaboration with Hai Choo Wines & Spirits, this event invited Claire and Keith from Margaret River to introduce older vintages of Moss Wood wines in both screw cap and cork enclosure. An interesting find indeed! We were not informed before hand which wines are from cork/screwcap closure.

Flight 1 - Moss Wood Chardonnay (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Moss Wood Chardonnay Moss Wood Vineyard 89 Points

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    ::Screw Cap::
    The 2004 Moss Wood Chardonnay in screw cap is still bright light yellow in colour with a slight cream and butter on the nose alongside vibrant orange peels, grapefruit and white flowers. A rather acidic finish and young with fresh orange on the palate with lemon peels.

  • 2004 Moss Wood Chardonnay Moss Wood Vineyard 87 Points

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    :: Cork ::
    The 2004 Moss Wood Chardonnay with cork closure is light gold in colour with an oily nose of walnuts, wet wood, mushroom and toast. Very wet wood on the palate and definitely more medium bodied than the screw cap closure. Broad slightly salty mid palate with a longer finish and calmer acidity. Stark difference with the screw cap closure really. Though I have to admit the bottle didn't taste too fresh, it probably isn't in a perfect condition given the vast difference between the 2003 Moss Wood Chardonnay (cork closure).

  • 2003 Moss Wood Chardonnay Moss Wood Vineyard 91 Points

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    :: Cork ::
    The 2003 Moss Wood Chardonnay is light medium gold in colour with walnut nuttiness on the nose. A slightly creamy palate accompanied with fruit cake and slight spice that ends on a medium finish. Definitely heavier and more intense on the palate than the screw capped bottle, nonetheless still very much alive and well developed. Really good wine, a good demonstration of an aged new world chardonnay.

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    :: Screw Cap ::
    The 2003 Moss Wood Chardonnay is light yellow in colour with a nose of slight petrol and chrysanthemum on the nose. Very pleasant! On the palate, notes of honey suckle, fresh lime and citrus with a slight petrol. Nice acidity on the finish and definitely still vibrant. This wine really puts a new world chardonnay in its place.

Flight 2 - Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    :: Screw Cap ::
    The screw cap closure for the 2004 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon pours a wine that is medium ruby in colour. On the nose, rather similar to the cork closure with slight dirt, cedar and mint. The palate is definitely calmer and the wine is less expressive as a whole compared to the cork closure.

    :: Cork ::
    The 2004 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is medium ruby in colour with a garnet rim. A developed cedar nose of crushed currants, dirt, earth and a slight woodiness. The entry palate still displays a slight fruit flavours before a good finish on its woodiness and a calm acidity. Tannins have already calmed down a little which makes it really approachable. Quite an expressive wine.

    :: Screw Cap::

    The 2003 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon with screw cap closure looks a little less garnet, perhaps on the rim, but still that medium purplish hues. Fruit flavours of juicy black currants and a slight woodiness with a rather broad mid-palate. Overall a bigger and fresher mouth feel as opposed to the cork closure.

    :: Cork ::

    The 2003 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is medium garnet in colour. Cassis, sweet spice, chocolatey mint on the palate with a gentle woodiness. Still quite vibrant and tannins beautifully pucker in the mouth. Missed the guess on this one, had a complete impression it was under screw cap from its liveliness.
