2007 Grosses Gewächs riesling tasting

This tasting story has been added later. I don't recall the order the wines were served in. The Amarone was drunk at the end of the tasting.

• 2007 Schäfer-Fröhlich Schloßböckelheimer Kupfergrube Riesling Großes Gewächs

  GG 2007 tasting: Decanted three hours. Spicy, green nose, gooseberries. Intense juicy taste that becomes more minerally with time, not terribly dry for S-F. Overall excellent, developing greater complexity, will benefit with more time in the cellar.

• 2007 Schlossgut Diel Dorsheimer Goldloch Riesling Großes Gewächs

  GG 2007 tasting: Decanted three hours. Soft nose with white fruits. Fairly opulent, but develops more complexity with time, lovely wine but not quite on a par with the others.

• 2007 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Winninger Uhlen Riesling "R" Roth Lay

  GG 2007 tasting: Decanted three hours. Lovely perfumed nose with roses, soap and yeast (!). Excellent creamy texture, slightly less dry than other GGs, though rather dry for a H-L wine. Complex, needs more time. More fruit than expected.

• 2007 Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier Frauenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs

  GG 2007 tasting: Decanted three hours. Perhaps the most focused of all the wines. More gun powder and oil than fruit: a sort of dark brooding wine, with an almost violent full-bodied taste, rather salt. Very impressive in its own right. Interesting to see where it goes from here.

  GG 2007 tasting: Decanted three hours. Like BattenfeldSpanier's Frauenberg, lots of gun powder and salt but also something citrus-like underneath which did not really come to express itself. Needs still more time.

  GG 2007 tasting: Decanted three hours. Less focused than expected. Lots of fine elements like melon, wet iron, something meatlike, great purity, but it did not really add up to the usual excellence on this occasion.

  Drunk with various cheeses at the end of a Grosses Gewächs 2007 tasting and not particularly noted: mature, raisiny wine, quite good without being remarkable.
