Brunello di Montalcino Focusing on 2007

Introduction

I have not had much experience with Brunello recently, so it was instructive to taste through these wines. While I do not gravitate toward Italian wines, 5 of the 6 bottles were at least very good, with the syrupy 2004 Fanti being the only exception.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2004 Tenuta Fanti Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Dark center, some browning. Heady, overripe aromatics of cherry liqueur and prune. Big, almost port-like, very ripe and chocolatey. That said, it also has some herb and acidity, but the finish is prickly. Extreme, fruit driven, overextracted style that just does not appeal as a table wine.

  • 2007 MastroJanni Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Light, fragrant with a bit of smokiness. Bright, fine upfront fruit followed by licorice, high but not intrusive acidity, and excellent minerality on the finish. Quite elegant and the antithesis of the farcically large scaled Fanti.

  • 2008 MastroJanni Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Pale with tawny rim. Low pitched, earthy nose full of tobacco leaf. Not at all centered on the fruit. Looser, less intense and less focused than the '07, but still very nice wine, not meager or underripe and best in terms of its supple feel in the mouth. For early consumption.

  • 2004 Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Light to medium red with light edge. Some volatile acidity and anise. Medium weight, good texture. Savory with subtle fruit that has a hint of natural sweetness. Powerful acids and some alcohol sticks out. Shorter, tannic finish. Certainly not perfect, but classic and there is a lot to like in this wine.

  • 2007 Podere Santa Maria (Colleoni) Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Light center, fading rim. Delightfully floral, fragrant nose. Light bodied, flavors of cherry and spice, fine acidity and little in the way of tannin. Very, very pretty wine, supple, already complex and well integrated soil at the end. Far and away my favorite wine of the tasting. It should have the balance to last and become more ethereal over the next 5 five years, but I doubt it has the stuffing for prolonged aging. Enjoy now!

  • 2007 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino

    Pale center, even lighter rim. Smoky aromatics. Deeply imbued with black cherry fruit and significant ripeness that is not over the top. Excellent depth, licorice tones give some dimension of complexity. Roundly tannic with gentle, long finish. Although much more modern in style than the Colleoni, I also thought this was excellent. Perhaps it will gain more nuance as it sheds its baby fat. Ooh, that price though...
