Chateau Latour vertical with Commercial Director Jean Garandeau

The Swiss wine trading company Arvi SA organized this tasting. Jean Garandeau, Commercial Director of the Chateau, was leading through the evening.

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. This was the apero drink. I am not a big Champagne connoisseur and I don't appreciate it very much either, but when I drink high end stuff like this, I feel that I might be missing out after all... Wonderful aromas of dried fruit, apple and bakery (toast, butter, honey). Pure and crisp with wonderful perlage. Apparently this is blended from up to 120 lots from different vintages and vineyards.

• 2000 Château Latour Les Forts de Latour 93 Points

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. Medium purple. Discrete nose of black current and forest floor. Medium body with crisp acidity and well integrated tannins. Very classic but not overly complex at this moment. May be this also needs another 3 years waiting time.

• 2001 Château Latour Grand Vin 94 Points

  At Arvi Chateau Latour vertical tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. This wine was the positive surprise of the evening. Discrete, almost muted nose of black fruits. On the palate however outstanding balance and complexity with typical Latour aromas of dark fruit, forest floor and minerals. Highly delicious and drinkable. Very classic Pauillac indeed.

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. Dark ruby with garnet rim. Expressive nose of forest floor with pronounced musty, mushroom and farmyard notes. On the palate soft and pleasant but with a bit of the hole in the mid palate. Nose stronger than palate. Ready now.

• 2003 Château Latour Grand Vin 96 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. A very unusual Latour from its aromatic side compare to all other Latour. Dark purple. On the nose beautiful ripe notes of dried fruit, mint, dark berries, toast/coffee, quite showy. On the palate full bodied with soft tannins and enough acidity to support the fruit. At the moment this wine needs more aromatic complexity to score higher, may be that comes as more secondary aromas develop over time.

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. Decanted 2h. Medium purple. Discrete nose of black current with chocolate, still quite primary. On the palate medium bodied with surprisingly soft tannins but pronounced acidity. I think this is still a wait.

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. Voted as the best bottle of the night. Decanted 2h. Expressive and complex nose of black currant, forest floor, mint, cedar oak. On the palate full bodied with outstanding tannic grip and freshness. Fruit, tannins, acidity, all there in spades. An ultra classic Bordeaux.

• 1995 Château Latour Grand Vin 95 Points

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. Medium ruby with garnet rim. Discrete nose of black currant and forest floor. On the palate very soft and balanced, classic and highly drinkable, a bit like the 2001. A very solid Latour, though clearly a notch below from vintages like 2000 or 1990.

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. Dark ruby. Expressive nose of dark fruits with forest floor, musty and animalic notes, clearly secondary in style. On the palate full bodied with soft tannins and racy acidity. A strong showing, may be for some a bit too "funky" in its aromatic expression.

• 1975 Château Latour Grand Vin 92 Points

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. From Magnum. Dark ruby with garnet tones, fairly youthful color. Discrete nose of foresty, musty tones. On the palate still good balance and energy for this age, however the cleanness of the fruit does not come though as well as in the younger vintages where the vinification is much more precise.

• 1990 Château Latour Grand Vin 98 Points

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. Dark ruby with garnet rim. Expressive nose of black and red fruit with forest floor and toast. Very ripe fruit enters the palate with soft tannins and good acidity. Great energy still for its 20 years in bottle. An outstanding Latour, voted a close second behind the 2000.

  At Arvi Chateau Latour tasting, Grand Hotel Dolder. This was the dessert wine to wrap up a terrific evening. Very expressive nose of apricot, pears quince and botrytis and a hint of smoke, very complex. On the palate wonderful balance of body and freshness.
