  • NV Jean Lallement Champagne Grand Cru Brut

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Tasting. 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, all Grand Cru. Very Pinot in nature to me with rounded fruit, showing apple and raspberry hints. Some leanness and energy on finish. Very good.

  • 2011 Failla Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard Fort Ross - Seaview

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Fort Ross - Seaview

    Tasting. Forward red cherry aromas and flavors. Slightly fat on palate. Slight sweet spice on nose, less so on palate. Good fruit, slightly flabby on finish, so best to drink young.

  • 2010 Ziereisen Rhini

    Germany, Baden

    Tasting. Tart red cherry and strawberry, lean styled, on nose and palate. Delicate fruit with subtle allspice and licorice. Nicely textured with lots of acidity.

  • 2009 Bell Hill Pinot Noir

    New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury

    Tasting. From a moderate, less extreme vintage. Lush red and black cherry to start, seemingly very ripe when first poured, then softening and showing more nuance with more air. Spice also evolved, showing Asian five spice and soy. Big scaled with firm but elegant tannins. Vineyard is on the site of a former limestone quarry. Very good.

  • 2005 Cristom Pinot Noir Eileen Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    Tasting. Black cherry aromas and flavors with a rich and intense spice driven character. Well textured with elegant and silky tannins, supporting acidity and overall good energy. Just starting to show some maturity.

  • 2010 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Tasting. Black cherry aromas with a blueberry hints. Meaty spice throughout. Similar fruit profile on palate with a slightly rugged, rustic edge that will soften in another 2-5 years, when I expect more finesse will show through. 90-91 point potential for me today, but not showing that in terms of pleasure at this moment.

  • 2010 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Tasting. Red cherry and strawberry aromas with intense sweet spice. Slightly darker flavors, mostly red and black cherry, slightly lean to start but with great power and concentration throughout that kept expanding. Firm for now, I'd give this to 2022 before really expecting it to fully show its potential. I think it's somewhat unfair to serve this wine in this tasting, alongside other fine wines that just can't compete with Grand Cru pedigree. Unfair, but I'm not complaining.

  • 2011 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Looney Vineyard

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

    Tasting. black fruit aromas and flavors, but clearly in a leaner style than I typically expect from AS, showing some underripe vintage character. Background floral hints help a lot.Firm acidity and tannins add both charm and some contrast to the fruit, providing bit of a rustic edge.

  • 2011 Domaine Arnoux Pére et Fils Aloxe-Corton Les Chaillots

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton

    Tasting. red and black fruit in the leaner character of the vintage. Approachable and engaging fruit with most spice. Good finesse start-to-finish. Drinking well now, most likely best to drink young.

  • 2007 Maison Champy Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Tasting. mostly black fruit with meaty spice. Firm and assertive tannins to start, good length with greater nuance and balance in middle and finish. Good for its vintage and level.

  • 2009 Domaine Cyrot Buthiau Volnay 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

    Tasting. Ripe red and black fruit aromas with modest spice. Faint floral notes provide some additional charm. Lush and fleshy but easy for anybody to enjoy. Also good balance with some sneaky textural background from middle to finish. Not super complex, but a very good representation of what ripe vintage Volany should be. My first experience with this producer, who unfortunately couldn't make the IPNC event given the terrible hailstorms a few days earlier throughout Côte de Beaune.

  • 2010 Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Southeast Block

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    Tasting. Very foward and ruit drive showing simple red and black cherry with nice level of elegance and very fine tannins. Slightly sweet finish was a slight distraction, but good textures a real positive.
