Introduction

The Oxbridge of London wine tastings once again delivered a very interesting introduction this time into German wines. Granted mostly focussed on the Mosel and avoided the lets say "not interesting" varieties of German wine this was very insightful and full of interesting facts.

Flight 1 - To Start (1 Note)

  • 2010 Selbach Riesling Berrys' Own Selection 84 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Light, easy going and forward wine. Enjoyable in its easy going nature although at times it felt unbalanced and with a bitter edge. Not bad at all but as expected at this price range low on complexity and depth. 83-85

Flight 2 - The Dry (3 Notes)

Flight 3 - The non dry (6 Notes)

  • 2010 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett halbtrocken 86 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Light pertrolly character here. Touch of honey on the nose. Off dry in style, with a light sharp edge in the midpalate. Good acidity. Nice citrus notes too. 86

  • 2008 Weingut Bercher Burkheimer Feuerberg Spätburgunder Erste Lage 80 Points

    Germany, Baden

Red dark in colour. The nose starts very promising, elegant, light herbal, red fruit and touch of earth..but that is the end of the show folks. The attack on the palate is relentless. Bitter, green and not pleasant at all. The bitterness stays with you for like 1 long minute almost. Hope and time might improve this but for sure we found it difficult to drink now. Where is the fruit here? Maybe hidden behind all the tannin from the wood and grape? And really for £55 we were expecting a lot more. 80

  • 2009 Selbach-Oster Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

This is a very nice wine. Golden with a greenish tint. The nose starts off petrolly as expected with light honey and a touch of lime. A touch sweeter than expected but not overdone. Nice balance on the palate, with good firm acidity in the structure. This is a very good example of a spatlese and if we have to be very picky the only errors we would find was a lack of vibrancy, energy (reminded us of a 2003 in a way) and a touch short on the finish. Very good though. 91

  • 2010 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese * 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

A star on the label here and thus like a Gold capsule this indicates the grapes were affected by noble rot. The colour points that way for sure, dark golden. The nose light and is a mix of Riesling aromatics, petrol, honey and the hall marks of botrytis so a touch of ripe apricots and peaches. On the palate it is viscous, ripe and dense. Sweet honey notes. Very round and utterly delicious. 91-92

  • 2009 Alfred Merkelbach Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese #6 84 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Light gold, greenish tint. Light petrolly nose. Citrus notes on the palate but really the weight of this is more of a spatlese than an auslese and disappoints on this front. Even the acidity is not there in a level enough o create a balanced wine. At times bitter too and lacks harmony and flow. 84

  • 2009 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Quite light in colour and there is very little botrytis if any here. Light petrolly nose, light herby feel too, mineral and citrus. The palate is just beautiful and although still too young (Prums need time to age by design) it has the hallmarks of the great wine this will be in the long term. Good acidity, structure and full of character and elegance. This is not a blockbuster wine just pure enjoyment. We would advocate patience here. 92 at this stage but it will get better.
